I was thinking of switching over to AVID

So, for you avid users out there, have you guys ever used Premiere or FCP? Is the workflow that much faster in AVID? Someone was telling me everything is in real time so you dont have to wait for renders as much in AVID.

There must be a reason for this to be the industry standard right?

Is it really that much better?

Sorry about the 20 questions but I was thinking of getting AVID but it would be great to know what my fellow dvxusers thought. thx.

Ok, I have used both Premiere and FCP to some degree or another. Now I started editing on an Avid. So, I've always been more comfortable with an Avid. To be honest, I think Avid's trim tool is the quickest easiest way to make fast, and precise edits. There's my .02 cents.

I used the first version of fcp and 6.5 from premier I know they are old now but I loved fcp but now i have an avid and i love it.

You might want to do a search about this. It's well-covered ground.

Bottom line: They're just tools. If you're current NLE isn't providing you what you need, then yeah, you might want to switch. Switching to Avid isn't going to miraculously make your cuts better.

If you'd like to post some of the things that you're unhappy with in your current NLE, or things that you are wanting to achieve then we can offer some better insights.

Well, the main thing about AVID that might make me want to switch is that I hear there are not as much rendering in AVID compared to the other NLE's and they advertise everything in "real" time so I just thought it would make everything faster.

Yea I'll go and do another search here. thanks a bunch for the input guys.

The Mojo box tends to make almost everything real-time. Avid is quite a poweful tool - go for it! :)

In started on Primiere because I could afford it at the time, but after talking to professionals, they said you can not get a job in the industry without some AVID experience. I have using it for a year or so and can image going to anything else, although FCP is starting to make a run in the consumer market

yea that mojo box looks nice but it is quite pricey...

has anyone used the canopus ACEDVIO card? at B and H its $329. I wonder if this card also helps in real-time editing.

I guess I'll have to try that freedv thing avid has. I heard it is very limited though.

Has anyone used Avid liquid?

never mind...I just saw other posts on it. for liquid that is

The ACEDVIO card doesn't work with Avid. I wasn't sure if you're asking in the context of Avid, or for PPro, but I thought I'd mention that just in case.

I've been an Avid user for ten years now, and I've invested too much to go elsewhere, but if I were starting out I'd definately go with Premiere or FCP, since they are both faster, especially where effects are concered. Avid does have much better color correction than the Premiere and FCP's that I've used.

Cost/bennifet and required workflow is largely what separates FCP from Avid (I'm not familiar w/P Pro so I can't comment on it) not the software's ability. Yes, Avid Xpress Pro w/Mojo or a Media Composer Adrenaline will have more RT than FCP and they cost significantly more than Final Cut Pro. A show I'm currently working on is switching from Media Composer Adrenaline's down to old Avid Meridien systems because, for our needs, the Adrenaline's don't cut it (newer isn't always better).

There is a reason why Avid is the industry leader and there is a reason FCP is gaining ground left and right. You can't really go wrong w/either. Just understand their strengths and weaknesses and pick the platform that best suits your needs.

What do you guys think about Avid re-encoding all the footage into its native codecs? That has been a major disappointment for me over the course of the last few otherwise happy years.
