COMMERCIAL: I was hired to cut a trailer for A Lonely Place For Dying

I've worked on studio trailers in the past, but transitioned to behind the scenes docs for their dvd and blu-ray releases a couple years ago. So it was nice to get back to doing a trailer. And here it is...

Nice trailer! Looking forward to seeing the film. Justin's hard work looks like it really paid off!

Nice work! Too bad the production threads were deleted. They were pretty good at the beginning. I started through them, but didn't get to part where things started going sour. Glad everything turned out well

Great work, Zak! So how do you go about editing a studio trailer? Do they just dump all the footage in your lap and have you go at it? Or do they provide the short clips that they want in the trailer and leave it up to you to make it work?

Michael Scovotti kinda looks like Seth Rogan (from Superbad). And is James Cromwell ever seen outside of a phone booth in this movie?

subtle, it depends on where production/post is on the feature. sometimes it's early and they're going to give you all the dailies and the assistant editors go thru and log everything. this is why you'll often see things in trailers that aren't in the final film -- outtakes or alt takes. or, it's later and they'll give you a cut (usually an early cut) of the film to work from. once its locked, an asst goes thru and clean prints picture with the final image, and that goes to another post house that does the same but with the 2K scan for theatrical. an asst also preps audio and sends it to be mixed on a stage like TODD-AO. this, for example, was just mixed in FCP. a professional will be taking it over and doing a 5.1 soon.

getting studio gigs, at first, requires that you work for one of the major trailer houses.

Wow! That is a great looking trailer. I hope the film is as good as it looks. Did you do the sound F/X too? Because it all looked very professional. I mean I know you are a professional, I'm just saying, LOL, it looked very slick.
