I was gone for 2 years, what has happened since?!

hey guys,
W-O-W. Sounds like a lot of stuff has happened to the DVX user world. I was one of the first people to buy a DVX ("P" version) and remember when this website was just beginning to make its presence in the internet!

Last year, I sold my DVX as I was doing more and more web work and no longer had a need for it! However, lately, I've been feeling the urge again to do some video work. So, can someone tell me in a nutshell what are the best video cameras this day? Specifically, what is best for nature/outdoor shooting in Hi-Def?

HVX200 is the way to go? What's this "red" camera I keep hearing about? And, lastly, what the f*ck is the LETUS FLIP?

Would I be correct in saying that the HVX + Letus is the best 1-2 punch for today's filmmaker?

Hot cams - Panasonic HVX-200 - Sony PMW EX-1 - RED One
Hot 35mm adapters - Letus Extreme, SG Pro, Brevis

You just have to read the threads to determine what is the best 1-2 punch. Not sure if you aware of the economics? HVX-200 $5,199.00, EX-1 $6,499.00, RED One - about $30,000.00 to $50,000.00 with everything you need to make films.

A lot has changed since the DVX days. Any of the three cameras above are capable of Oscar level work in the right talented hands. I own the HVX and the Letus and it is a sweet setup. But the Sony has some advantages too. The general consensus is that the HVX still looks more filmic than the Sony, the Sony is less noisy, better in lower light, but more video looking. The RED is a whole other ballgame, it is much more of a competitor to 35mm film, not prosumer cameras.

All I can say is research, read, discuss and make a decision. I wouldn't buy a camera until after April/NAB, just to see what goes down. RED will introduce a new "pocket cam" called Scarlet, who knows what Panasonic might come out with. I will be surprised if Sony shows any new lower end cams, they are selling a ton of EX-1s plus they just introduced a ton of new HDV cameras that have some killer features, too bad that they are HDV format.

Good luck,

Dan

Dan, you summed up everything so well that you left nothing else to say to the rest of the guys... I was expecting this thread to go for pages!

Er...There's also a new casio Exilim that does many frames per second? Ok, right, that's at 320x240. Sorry :)

Thanks Sergio. I read way too many posts on DVX User, it's starting to sink in ;-)

I concur, great summary Dan.

I'd just add (for someone who has been away for over 2 years) about the solid state media recording (P2, SxS, firestores, etc...) how the digital camera world is finally starting to distance itself from tape.

I would add that rental houses have been hurt fairly signifigantly as previously priced cameras would have been a rental situation for me and countless others. I now own a camera that I don't have to have a disclaimer in front of in comparison to "broadcast" level cams. That rental savings more than covers the cost of owning a camera.
