I recently posted this same question elsewhere, but I figured it might be just as viable here (can I make the same post twice?).
I've recently wanted to do some serious distorting of light for a music video I'm making, and I couldn't find any other good examples until I came across this other video recently.
Zedd - Stay The Night (featuring Hayley Williams) (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i-gyZ35074k)
If you watch it, give it time to kick in. The effect is insane.
It perfectly demonstrates the kind of thing I want to do with the lighting (as well as the editing, shaky cam, and some other things too).
There's also a behind-the-scenes video here:
http://www.billboard.com/video/zedd-...-video-5720435
...which demonstrates a lot of what they did, but still, it hasn't shown me enough to create the effect I want, and so I wondered if any of you creative folks could give me a few pointers
The director has someone wave a light bulb in front of the lens, which seems to diffract the practical lights in really weird, beautiful, chaotic way. I like to call it "dirty light". I have no idea if that's a real term, but it seems to fit what I want.
I've tried the light bulb, but, unfortunately, overall it doesn't seem to give me what I really need. Does any one have any other similar ideas which would give me a similar effect?
I would have thought that a lot of the effects were done in post, however, from the video, it seems it was all done in camera. It really is mind blowing (at least to me). I want to do everything in camera too.
But please don't limit yourselves to the techniques used for this video. If you have any cool, crazy ideas that are out of the box, please let me know.
I really want to create insane, crazy, flared, chaotic, dirty light.
Thanks.
