I Want The BEST!

Hi everyone- I'll be brief.

I have shot a short film using the DVX-100a, 24p.

I edited the film in Avid Xpress Pro v. 5.6

1] What is the BEST format to export the film in for a DVD, burned in DVD Studio Pro 4.0??? By best i mean best image quality, best sound, etc?

2] What is the best format to export the film for the web? It's about 6:20 in length. I'm hoping to get roughly a 200mb file, or smaller

THANKS EVERYONE! I looked for these answers but couldn't find exactly what I needed.

DVDs are MPEG-2. It's the only format you can use. If you render as anything else and your authoring software accepts it, it will re-render it as MPEG-2. Might as well render to MPEG-2 while you have control over it.

"Best" for the web will get you different answers. Windows Media or H.264 are probably your best bets.

mpeg2

Okay, forgive me if this is dumb...

But I only see mpeg-4 listed in Avid, nothing with mpeg-2.

Someone mentioned that the best export option was as a Quicktime movie, using the NTSC/DVPRO codec. Is this wrong?

thanks!!

You can, but you usually lose control over the bitrate, quality, etc., once you drop it into your DVD authoring app. If you can control all that yourself, you're better off.

I don't remember exactly which export option in Avid gives you MPEG-2.

I'm going to give this a try: if someone out there has some advice on whether or not this is a smart move, please let me know-

I'm going to export the movie out of Avid with NO compression, full quality. Then I'm going to use Apple Compressor to convert it to an Mpeg2 file, and then author and burn the dvd in DVD Studio Pro 4.0.

thanks

Xraal,

That's exactly what you should do. Uncompressed guarantees a clean transport from one program to another (if you have the storage for it).

Hi everyone-

well, if anyone cares, this is what worked in the end:

I exported out of Xpress as "Same as source" WITH the Avid Codec turned ON. With it turned off, the footage was darker for some reason. I know people don't like this function, but I retained a great black level and overall color scheme.

I then used Compressor 2 to convert this .mov to an Mpeg 2, 2 VBR pass, 6.2 mbps. The results were just great! No blockiness or streaking, rich colors, etc.

I had no luck exporting out of Avid uncompressed, and then converting it to an mpeg2 file. The results always had blockiness (especially in movement).

thanks for everyone's help...
