Some people can compose and orchestrate in their head. Me, I need the keys to work it out. Having a midi keyboard/controller gives me that option. I'll watch my rough cut and try to play different themes, and use different instruments as the video plays in real time. Then I rewind and try something different, or use a different instrumentation or tempo without having to reprogram the midi file. I just play it differently. It 's a method that works well for me. THe Garritan software is supposed to be a great buy for the money, but if you go that route, it still might be a good idea to get a midi controller keyboard, or an inexpensive midi keyboard/synth to hook up to your computer.

hes got a midi controller, but im nto sure if it works with the garritan stuff, although it appears to come with the cubasis sequencer so i would assume it can.


.. i come up with my compositions just like you. i pretty much do the same thing if im at a lack of ideas for a composition for something. i watch it and play live to it scanning diffrent tones and voices, and figure out what sound i like, and then i hit record and do the same thing recording layer after layer in real time live to the visuals. just out of my head.. so its a bit of both. .. but, if i have a preconcieved or requested idea i usually do the composition first, and then edit to that , or take the time to think out all the composition in my head wth all the orchestration and such before i start the live recording.

Sorry, I missed that. I use cubasis for hard disc recording/multitracking, but allegro finale for composing/sequencing.

hmmm .. maybe this site shoud have a section for music composition and scoring.

..see jim .. i told you that you need to pay closer attention .. geesh! ::)

..apparently my PM was a copy of the original post ..which i ...uh.. sorta skimmed over. :P


..yeah scoring and soundtrack or other musical/sound creation related stuff aside from production audio would be cool.. its a while different world than whats generally discussed in the audio section.

Kai, do you have any samples I can check out? You're a musician too? Alot of talented people here.
