I'm interested in a new camera and I think this is the one. Is it a good time to buy? I just don't want to jump in and then have the FS200 come out the next week. Are there any new ones on the horizon?
Who knows. There will always be something a little shinier down the road. Maybe a week, maybe a month, maybe a year. The FS100 is a good camera if it suits your needs today. If you think that some incremental new gizmo on a hypothetical camera will make your FS100 look bad - think again. Take your last few productions and think of the audience and the subject matter. Could anyone, including a professional tell what camera shot it? The biggest difference in cameras in this category is the experience of the users. XLR inputs, accessory availability, recording format, size, weight, etc. Just my 2 cents. I have owned many, many cameras in fact I owned a rental house for 8 years. I never once waited for the next thing in line and never regretted it. Buy the camera that covers most of your work today and it will pay for itself.
I'd doubt there's any thing new coming from Sony for a while - the VG20 is only now hitting shelves (France/Japan), while the FS100 has only been out 7-8 months. That's 3 S35 sized cameras - not to mention several lenses - Sony's put out this year alone.
I haven't seen any price reductions or bundled lens offers (as is happening with the AF100), and I haven't seen any FS100's on Ebay (as of today, nothing used that I saw).
So unless Canon is giving away the farm on Nov 3rd, I'd guess there'd be a solid year between now and the next big camera release.
For the $5000 body price range, the fs100 is the best that there is going to be for a little bit. Worrying about having the newest best thing will stress you out and kill your bank account. Like rx8pilot said, you could look at any low budget video in the past two years and it couldve been made with any low budget camera, its about learning to use that camera to its fullest.
I'd wait till after Nov 3rd since it is only 3 days away. Who knows what Canon and Red are announcing, but given the secrecy of both, I'd say it would be worth the wait.
Other than that, I really like my FS100, but what I'd really like is the AF100 and FS100 best features in one camera!
