i think my pc just broke :(

Re: i think my pc just broke :(

I emailed the video card company to see if they can give me an RMA. i hope so!

Does the video card effect the speed of editing, rendering or just overall windows? I feel as if its more jittery now that im using an older video card. It doesnt take any longer to load, but the small effects like the address bar in mozilla coming down is now staggering.
In editing, when im moving a track around, its not a smooth anymore...

does this have to do with the video card?

Re: i think my pc just broke :(

Yeah, the older card is going to cause the general visual Windows atmosphere to be less smooth. From what I gathered, it sounds like the 9800 you got was a third-party card based on the 9800 chip (please correct me if I'm wrong), so I think that may have been what caused your problem.

Re: i think my pc just broke :(

yeah the card wasnt made by ATI, it was made by Sapphire. I assume that was the problem

Re: i think my pc just broke :(

Sapphire is a good company. Could just be a bad unit. For the most part, ATI doesn't make their own cards, there are many thrid party ATI cards out there that beat the performance of ATI's own cards. By the way, an older video card will not slow down your rendering at all. The card does nothing except display the video when working with 2d DV footage.

What do you mean by that? Will it look any worse while editing? or more jittery?

Re: i think my pc just broke :(

No, your video card will not effect your editing experience at all unless a. you are using an NLE that supports video card rendering (like after effects) and b. if you are using an NLE that supports this you need to be using 3d layers for your video card to have any performance boost on your workflow. In short, if you are cutting your film and doing normal editing, ie. no 3d compositing, you could use a Gforce2 if you wanted with the same performance as your Radeon XT or whatever. Now if you are playing games or doing 3d rendering, that is another story.

Re: i think my pc just broke :(

Well actually, while having an older video card won't affect your rendering, it will affect how smoothly the Windows shell environment operates (i.e. dragging/resizing windows, opening menus, all that visually-pleasing stuff) so it will be noticeable while you're editing; just not in the actual editing material.
