i think my pc just broke :(

This morning my pc was frozen at the desktop. When i tried to restart the display wouldn't show anything, said "no signal". i felt the computer and it was really hot.

I wait a few minutes, let it cool down, turn it on again, windows begins loading, then suddenly it goes out again, all black.
An hour later I turn it back on and now there are block of colour all over the windows screen and stuff is all distorted. plus, the fan on my graphics card (sapphire radeon 9800pro 128mb) stopped spinning now...

Im assuming the graphics card just went to hell?

and I was about to replace this pc with a mac too, bah

Re: i think my pc just broke :(

Yep...Sounds like you better call it. Maybe it found out about the new Mac. :D

Re: i think my pc just broke :(

Sounds like a heat issue - have you noticed it running quieter lately? Perhaps one or more fans have quit working. Try powering the system on with the case off and see if the fan over the CPU spins, also if there are any case fans see if they spin. Finally check to see if the fan in the Power Supply spins when the power is on.

It is possible that replacing any non-functioning fans could salvage this system. Since it does power up after cooling down, then once proper cooling is restored it may function correctly once again.

Or, on the other hand, it has learned of your desire for another and is refusing to provide for your needs. As you know, PCs don't stand for infidelity ;)

Yeah. You throw it away and shell out another three grand. :o

Re: i think my pc just broke :(

yeah well i guess i'll ahve to see, I havent heard it getting any quieter, i know my motherboard has a safety feature where it will shut off and start making some music with beeps to tell me its overheated. all the fans seems to be turning, except the graphics card, im looking around the sapphire site to see if theres a warranty thing. the computer seemed to be really hot though.
I love how it will just randomly fail...

David, the way I see it, you shell out 3000 bucks, then when you replace it a few years later, sell it for 1500 and shell out another 3000. gotta love mac resale value

lets not make this a mac vs. pc thread, lets keep all the attention on me :)

Re: i think my pc just broke :(

i considered that but its screwed on there, maybe i'll recheck when i get home

Re: i think my pc just broke :(

Well, the cards are screwed on at the end next to the case...however, the other end of the card sometimes comes loose. Simply press the end opposite the end by the case and see if it slips down into the socket.

Re: i think my pc just broke :(

At least you were already thinking about switching. Get yourself a dual processor G5 and a 23" monitor, and you'll wish that pc would have blown up sooner!

Re: i think my pc just broke :(

It sounds like your video card may have overheated and cooked itself. If your motherboard has onboard video, try unplugging the video card and just using the onboard to boot up and see if that works.

Yeah. You throw it away and shell out another three grand.

How true

At least you were already thinking about switching. Get yourself a dual processor G5 and a 23" monitor, and you'll wish that pc would have blown up sooner!

Yeah... right up until you try and do something functional...

Re: i think my pc just broke :(

Have you tried checking the end pins of your monitor cable? Maybe some of your pins have been bent or something. If not just buy a new video card and a pack of beef jerky.

Re: i think my pc just broke :(

...yeh, if you consider constant virus detection, downloading new virus protection daily, and weekly hard drive rebuilding, being functional. Personally, I'd rather edit video and actually get real work done... but hey, to each his own.

Re: i think my pc just broke :(

damn it, dont turn this into a mac vs. pc thread. If you dont like mac, dont tell me how much they suck. im getting a mac and I wish i could get a 23inch with a dual proc. g5 soon, but I need to save up some more and finish paying off the DVX first.

I have a radeon 9800pro so its not onboard, i took teh card out, i dont see anything burnt on it (ive seen that before on damaged cards) but the fan wont spin properly, im going to try using an old geforce3 card I have and see if that works. Anyone know if sapphire ATI offer a warranty, i cant find anything on their site about it.

Hey I'm running two PC's here and have been for a long time. nNothing on your list is happening to me. If you must go online with a PC run a separate unit with a firewall. It is not the pc's fault that every hardcore idiot hacker kid out there is gunning for it. If macs were constantly under fire, they would go down just as fast. Other than the internet there's not much else out there to upset the balance of a well maintained PC. I don't get why mac people have to bash the PC all the time. I run both and I can tell you first hand That My Pc's and the Macs I work with are both stable reliable platforms with neither suffering any more grief than the other. I know people who shouldn't run more than an electric can opener who have a world of problems because they click yes to every box and constantly tinker without a duece of an idea what they're doing. When will this pc bashing stop? If I had a dollar for every time a mac user posted "can you post a quicktime of that, I can't open a wmf" I would be driving a bigger car and eating fatter steaks.

Re: i think my pc just broke :(

i tried the geforce3 and it works

I guess there is a problem with the 9800 pro.

i hope sapphire has a warranty thing

Re: i think my pc just broke :(

The MAC/PC debate is tired and the people who subscribe to them are usally just caught up in the marketing hype; which is exactly what they want. Get over it.

Re: i think my pc just broke :(

K' john....I'm over it, just a little sensitive about my little worhorsees is all :)

Glad to hear the jam stopped at your card Carlos. For what it's worth, When my video box is working hard all night Rendering it gets pretty warm. I upgraded to a larger 24" tower and put six cooling fans in. Only drawback is when all my horsees are running, this room gets powerfull warm and it sounds like a data processing center for a large bank ;)
