I Shot in 24p F5, Now What? Jaggedy...

Just got my camera...I shot in 24p using the f5 setting.
Captured via firewire into Avid 4.3 in a 24fps session.
INTERLACE CITY! Pixel Town USA!

First off, I thought 24p was not interlaced.

Secondly, I captured in a 29.97 session, still looks like crap.

Here is the ONLY way I had any success:
I captured my 24p footage in a 29.97 timeline
I exported my edited timeline to a QT Ref file.
I imported this QT ref file into Adobe After Effects 6.
I chose bottom field first and "guess" the 3:2 pullodown.
Re-exported as an AVI. WHAT A HASSLE! but no more zipper effect.

How do I handle this in Avid 4.3?
Thanks,

You need to shoot ADVANCED in order to edit native 23.976. Only when editing in that project format will you retain the progressive nature of the original acquisition. The footage is acquired as progressive at 23.976fps but stored on NTSC tape which is an interlace format. Working in a 29.97i project retains the interlace nature of the NTSC.

4.3 only supports ADVANCED.
5.1 supports INTERLACE and ADVANCED pulldown capture in a 23.976 project.

I shot in 24P (F5) Non-advanced

I shot in 24P (F5) Non-advanced

I shot in 24P (F5) Non-advanced and am editing in Avid XPress Pro 5.1. Can I still get the best resolution if I choose "Advanced" in the Film and 24 P settings. If I do that the warning of "Only advanced pulldown is supported at the current resolution" goes away in the Capture Tool dialog.

Problem is the resolution doesn't look very impressive. I shot a sunrise on the beach and it just looks pixelated after capturing and playing in Avid. Any advice? I looked to other settings to increase resolution without luck. My choices for "Res" in the Capture Tool are DV25P 411 OMF (which is chosen by default) and 28:1 OMF. What do these mean?

I took this screenshot from a paused image captured from an F5 24P shoot without the cadence adjusted to Advanced (it was set at Standard). It's alright, but I'm hoping I can expect much better quaility. I'm going to try again and fix the cadence this time, I just can't get Avid to recognize my deck now! No Deck! Even when closing Avid, turning on my AGDVX100A, setting it to VTR mode (with TC.. option OFF), then starting up Avid. This worked for me before but now I just get the "NO DECK" in the capture tool. Manually added deck or auto-configuring doesn't work either. Help?

Delete the deck channel in the deck configuration tool. Shot down application. Connect camera/deck before launching Avid. Make sure OS sees it. LAunmch Avid and create a new deck configuration setting.

Remember that NORMAL pulldown cannot be captured in a 23.976 correctly until your get to Xpress Pro v.5.2.

Thanks. I eneded up unplugging the firewire a couple times and Avid finally saw the deck. Really, really, really clugey way of doing this especially for software designed for 24P - meaning most people buying "Xpress" would have basically one of two 24P cameras yet I had to almost perform magic to get one to work. It still recognizes it as a Generic device but I'll take what I can get at this point. Maybe I should be buying an actual deck? What's a reasonably priced deck that can handle 24P? Do decks need to be specially designed to handle 24P or is that simply something specific to the tape that the 24P was captured on?

Finally, is v5.2 a free upgrade from 5.1?

Thanks very much.

I have never had a problem with Xpress Pro working with a 24p camera. Something to keep in mind is that many camera (if any) do not declare themselves over the FireWire as well as a deck. A camera needs to be set up manually by selecting manufacturer and model. This is not an Avid issue, but the way cameras work when behaving as playback devices.

I need to check in v.5.2 being a free update or not. I am pretty sure the avid.com site would indicate that.

It looks like it's $50 to go to the 5.2 HD version from a 4.x version. I have a 5.1 version, so I guess I need to call avid because their site doesn't mention my scenario.

Sorry, Xpress Pro 5.1 should be be able to capture NORMAL pulldown. FO yo Film/24p settings and select NORMAL for cadence type and make sure "pulldown cadence to timecode to 00:00:00:00 is set to "A" and is active.

Hey Michael, did I read that right?

A few posts above this, you say that with 5.2, you can edit F5 normal pulldown in a F6 advanced pulldown timeline?

I have two frame rates, and I want the dvd to be absolutely 24p, but one of the tapes was shot in F5, so can I mix the two?

Yes, once captured it is all 23.976fps regardless of cadence type. I made a mistake in my first post and I was thinking HDV, but NORMAL pulldown capture over FireWire is a 5.1 feature. Apologies again for the confusion.
