I, Robot?

Re: I, Robot?

Are Isaac Asimov's rules of robotics guidlines for how we should construct artificial inteligence? Or rules that artificial intelligence will inherently obey?

Rich

Now that is what I am talking about.  Those Robots are far more intriguing than the I, Robot CGI CRAP.  Thanks for the link; very interesting.

For those that do not know:

Re: I, Robot?

those are cooler but remember the point (i believe) is that they're domestic 'bots that turn against us.

I don't like the design either, but i admit that the cheesey design makes logical sense. The bot in those pics looks cooler, but a robot made to serve you sandwiches or scrub ur floors would never be designed to look like that. it would look like the friendly non threatening cheese in the movie.

right?

Re: I, Robot?

Well you can change the LOOK but lets try and keep it practical. These ROBOTS as viewed above are REAL and not CGI. Thats the idea Im pushing for. They can be REAL and look 'domestic friendly' (Can I trademark that?)

what? Those robots r real? oviously not. Please explain as it obviously went over my head

Re: I, Robot?

These Robots are real using Pnuematic (Sp?) technology. They are real in the sense that they are made of REAL PARTS and NOT CGI Animation.

:P :D

Re: I, Robot?

um... sry to be an ass.

r u just being sarcastic? It says right on the sight they're not real, if you couldnt tell just by looking at them?

sry, please explain the joke so we can laugh together

Re: I, Robot?

I'm confused? Are you saying that the robots in that spec video are Real and not CGI? Cuz as far as I can gather they are cgi. Looks as though they've comped over top of soldiers on some of the clips. Any way you look at it, it rocks. Robocop 2004.

As for I, Robot... the robots look like junk. I think everyone that I know who's seen it's trailers comment on how crappy they look. I liked the idea of this film when I first heard about it, but I thought he was strictly chasing down a lone rogue robot, kind of a "Blade Runneresque" movie(yes I know there was more than one robot Dekkard was after in B.R.) After seeing thousands of robots attacking I was most disappointed. Makes it very Sat morning cartoonish. Despite this I'll be seeing this film as I watch most summer blockbusters.

Best cgi I've seen has been in Minority Report. It's very subtle, blends into reality. also like what Guillermo Del Toro tries to do, the fusing of real and cgi. I know it doesn't quite look real, but it is cool non the less, and it only usually lasts for brief moments, instead of like Matrix Reloaded during the burly brawl - I hate that Neo vs. all the Mr. Smith's so much, so dumb in my eyes.

Re: I, Robot?

the robots in that spec vid i believe are mostly cg. some of it might be real, like maybe anytime it doesnt move. but i feel like its all cg. anyway, they did a great job.

i think my point was that when you see this cg robot from this spec vid, you think, ok, that thing is actualy a part of this world. its interacting like its really there, nothing about it seems impossible. sure, some of the compositing could have been a touch better, but for the most part its very well integrated into the plates and the world. the bots in i,robot. have this weird skin that glows from the inside, with metal bits on them that just seem overly shiny, to the point of looking fake. they just look unfinished and poorly designed. and the fact that they can jump 20' in the air, makes them unbelievable. they should have kicked it down a notch. whats wrong with a robot that is just a bit stronger then a human. why do they all have to be matrix agent strong.

i think apple should have designed the bots for i, robot. anyway, if you guys havnt seen this bjork vid, check it out. killer robot design, with excellent use of cg and live action.

Re: I, Robot?

Okay, as far as the film itself -- way better than I thought it was going to be. Of course, I went in dreading the very thought of it (wife wanted to see it) and I expected it to be total gar-bage, but instead it was really pretty fun. Will Smith is great as always, and after a while I quit caring that the robots looked like something out of the Powerpuff Girls school of animation.

However, that film is probably the most blatantly offensive product-placement advertisement I've ever seen. If I saw one more reference to Audi or JVC I woulda thrown a drink at the screen (not mine, I didn't have one, so I woulda had to take one from the guy next to me).

Re: I, Robot?

Im sorry guys; I completley misread :P Yes these are CGI. I was rushed and drinking :D

Nevertheless, damn if they dont look cooler than I Robot! Sorry about the confusion.

I agree it wasn't as bad as I was expecting either! But man are you right about the product placement!!!...
Converse anyone?? Audi JVC...you know it's always been there...(I've wanted a Delorean ever since Back to the Future)they're just not trying to hide it anymore! :)

But right when I was about to go in, some guy walking out of the theater said "It seemed like a whole bunch of other sub idea's made into a movie"...and that's how I felt too...

In the whole movie, there wasn't one original concept.

But still, I kinda liked it...

Re: I, Robot?

the only shot i can see that floats is the one where he is facing the camera with kids playing next to him.

i think what we should take a step back and look at these in comparison. the robocop thing is an in house spec spot by a small vfx house vs. a 100+million dollar hollywood movie.

anyway, i think no matter how good or bad vfx are in films there are people who will like or dislike them. there was a shot in the 2nd lord of the rings movie where Orlando Bloom jumps up onto a horse as it comes up from behind him. that shot blew me away, i wasnt sure how they did that, it looked so real. but people i know still go "it looked fake".

i, robot seems to be getting some ok reviews. and it doesnt seem as bad as it looks to be. i think i might check it out now sooner then later.

Re: I, Robot?

if you watch the DVD they show how that part is done. as soon as Orlando jumps, it's all CG from there. amazing isn't it? I love LOTR dvd's specials. it's like youre right there with them.
the embassy guys are great. I wish they would make a flight simulator. I'd buy it. play it. probably cost 8000 for the game. ..if it came out today that is.
that gritty, rugged look on those CG's are great. Those guys make tv shows. why don't they make every movie that's coming out? must be lighting effects. lots of lighting on those animations.

not to mention... that CG was placed over DV footage. now... that's impressive. think they degraded the res on the robot to match DV?
