I render, watch it, but later no video, only sound...

Does anyone know what could be happening here?
I render a video, watch rendered, all is beautiful. But then the next day or something, when I try to watch that same video, I just get the Quicktime audio player...with no video. Any clues?

As an existentialist, you should just accept your fate.

Short of that...

What do you mean 'render'... export? render?

Are you watching it in FCP or in QT Player? What exactly are you doing?

What codec or cam and what sequence settings?

Did you render it in the sequence and view it on the canvas, or export it from the sequence and view it with the QT Pro Player?

If the later, with what settings.

These is information necessary for assistance.

From the beginning, I render my movie via EXPORT > QUICKTIME MOVIE. Then it goes to my desktop and I double click it and watch it on quicktime player. After a day or so, though, when I double click on it, there's only that thin strip audio player from quicktime, with no video.

Thanks David for your time in replying.
I export it to Quicktime movie, using the Current Settings, from FCP.
Hence, once the rendering is done, I watch it from my desktop. Does that help my; situation any?

Any chance your system preferences are changing in your sound setup? Sometimes my audio goes to external speakers sometimes to my mixing board...

Also --

Could you have exported it as non self-contained and your audio is housed on another device that you have turned off? Say, an external FW drive?

Could be that your video render files are on one drive and the audio/video capture is on a FW drive that is off? But that doesn't make sense either. If it was not self-contained QT would be asking where those files were.

Hmmm

I'll wager it is some sort of system panel issue.

When you finish a project, how do you render it? Could you run me though what you do?

Well... typically the term 'render' is used for a process the NLE goes thru to allow you to play something in real time. The term EXPORT or RENDER OUT refers to getting the video out of the NLE.

That aside,

It would greatly help me to know what your final product will be. I have three or four EXPORT or RENDER OUT options that I use depending on if I'm going to the web, dvd, another facility, or back to tape.

What are you doing?

Ok, it's a documentary for DVD output.

In FCP --

File - Export - QT Movie. Current Settings, AUDIO and VIDEO... DVDSP Chapter Markers

Do NOT check self-contained movie

Drag THAT file into Compressor and set it for 90 or 120 minute 2-pass high quality DVD.

Select ALL where it asks you for export formats... dolby ac3 audio, aaif, mpeg2 etc.

Drag that into DVDSP and create your menus.

Good luck,
