For a class I am currently in I need to write a 15 page research paper over a period of time on something that has not been written about, or something at least that is fairly unique. I decided to write mine on the effects that video distribution websites (i.e. youtube) but more specifically film production forums (like DVXuser) have had on the professionalism of independent films and the independent film community. I have my 15 pages broken up mostly into 2 page papers and then I will connect them all at the end, and I have to write one on the pros and one on the cons. So......how do you guys think dvxuser or any other film forum has positively influenced the independent film community and can you think of any negative influences?

I hope to get a lot of responses on this I think it will be interesting to see everyone's opinions.

Thanks guys!

Hello, you can see my site and work at www.mattsconce.com I would not have started into the world of Independent filmmaking without DVXuser. It provided a safe haven to learn and fail and become good at making films. Now I have won multiple awards, have written a feature film and am moving forward in the industry. I owe much of that momentum and support to Dvxuser.com. I think sites like this created an online film school, allowing people to learn the art of filmmaking with other people who love to do the same. It is Pro Pro for me. I see no cons.

Off the top of my head, it's helped in the same way that a gathering of ANY like minded individuals helps. I kow that most people on this site are probably from California or New York, but I'm in Oklahoma. I don't have friends, or relative or ANYONE that's interested in film that I can hang out with and talk about issues, problems, framerates and the like. This site (along with dvinfo.net) has brought answers to so many questions I've had. One simple thread with people who know their stuff is worth much more to me than talking with loads of people face to face who don't have any clue what I'm talking about. It also helps that it's free. If I were to try and learn this via classes, I would be spending money that I don't have (FCP Certification classes 1,2 and 3 cost about $4000 total). I can just jump into the FCP thread here and say, "What's happening with my 24p footage on this 24fps timeline?" I'll get a real answer and not some yahoo answer. Real people that have had the same problems can relate. Last, it's a great place to get critiquing on your work. Your friends and family will all hold your hand and say how great it is. I'm sure Kenny Luby (from On The Lot's) family did that. People are honest here. They're nice about it, but they'll tell you to cut half of your 45 minute short out. They know what they're talking about, too. I don't know if this is what you're looking for or not.

These are both great so far and it is exactly what I am looking for......even if you can't point on the specific words of the positive influence tell your story about how DVXuser has helped you because that will still help me out a ton. As far as negative influences I really can't think of any either for forums like this but for video distribution sites like youtube I was thinking about how some really crazy people with extreme opinions can get heard more easily. Seriously though I cannot think of one bad thing about DVXuser. I know I am not extremely active on the forums as far as posting but I am online multiple times a day just reading what other people write and constantly reading updates on the most current festival, I am always learning through this website and am just now starting to network with people as well. I cannot think of one complaint I have.

I'm not really sure if DVXuser is really helpful to film makers or not. Those damn links that Terry Lasiter keeps putting up could be a serious hindrance... at the very least, a time consuming distraction.

true.....or the creepy conversations between penguin and rogan.......they always give me a laugh.......then I shudder

The pro are that these sites are awesome and you can find out almost anything you want from someone who has done it or is doing it. The information is good and the people share openly. No one's afraid of you taking their job or feels the need to hold back information. At the same time the democratization has created a glut. Anyone can shoot a film now and now everyone's doing it.
