I am in the need for a camera stabilizer for a canon xl1. i built my own one. it's got the same form as glidecam 2000 or 4000 but without the gimbal. however, my problem is that i can't get stabilized picture when i used it. it is really heavy with the metal pipe and 5 pounds weight bell. so my question is "is the camera stabilizer such as glidecam 4000 or the flycam pro 5000 good to purchase for someone like me that has almost no money at all and dont want to waste about 300 bucks on something that won't work cuz im poor for this expensive product. and another question is " is the stabilizer with a gimbal better than the one without it?" or it doesnt matter it depends on the operator?

thanks

please help me out here! =]

The gimbal IS the reason you're not getting steady shots. The glidecam 2000 may not be the right one for the xl1. You may need the 4000...or try speaking to some of the guys on eBay who make their own.

Steadycams are a luxury if you're a poor, no budget DOP.

I built my own hand held stabilizer some time ago. As I added a heavier cam, a 35mm adapter, rod support, etc; I found it a bit heavy on the old arm. I ended up buying these plans for a full stabilizer rig:

http://codydeegan.com/

Total cost to build ends up at around $300-400. The plans are in the form of a book and are very detailed. There is an area in the homebuiltstabilizers.com fourm dedicated to the plans:

http://hbsboard.com/index.php?action=collapse;c=6;sa=expand#6

Look for the area called "Cody's plans"

Anyway, check it out.
