im new to video production, and im ready to jump right into it. ive been doing my research for about 1yr now. and its time i get to work. but, i only have about $3,000 to spend. im having trouble finding out which route i should go. should i purchase my dvx100a 1st? take classes/training? buy a g5 w/ fcp4? what order shoul i approach the situation? any advice would help.

thanks.

Re: i need help!!!!

$3000.00 ? Ouch.

Buy the camera first and foremost. You're not going to shoot without it. Do you have another computer you can use in the meantime and if so what kind? (MAC or PC?)

Re: i need help!!!!

Hey Aaron...Do you have anything in your arsenal now? cos if you have nothing then you're in a tough spot, cos all the stuff you mention will come to more than 3,000 dollars. if you get the DVX you can't edit and on and on...Maybe buy a g5 and rent DVX for now. Or dump the g5 idea and go cheaper PC route, maybe you can fit used DVX100 and used pc into the budget. maybe go to school and confirm the path choice. Hope this helps

Of course you understand this post was supposed to be ahead of Johns but I type slow ;D

Re: i need help!!!!

well im working w/ pc right now. but i want to use mac. its about time i upgrade my pc, so i figure might as well go ahead and get a mac instead of upgrading.

Re: i need help!!!!

I would suggest, first and foremost to hold onto your cash for a while. Learn the ropes, relax and feel the wild world of filmmaking out. Start by getting a gig, there's plenty of copy/credit/meals PA spots out there, check Mady.com, Craigslist.com, Indieclub.com, etc.

Then, after a few rounds of punishment, and climbing the ranks, (if you're fortunate enough) explore camera options, if of course you feel confident that this is something you want to explore. As far as all the 'classes' and so forth, save your money, if you haven't done it by now, and don't have a solid 'in' to film school, then don't bother. Jump into learning first hand, get on a set, and don't procrastinate by reading books, it's a cheap shortcut. Get on the set and ask as many questions as possible (without being irritating). Talk to everyone, soak in the input from everyone from crafties, to the Director.

Also, keep plugging away in forums like this one, (just don't become a Boyle) and listen, listen, listen. These cats around here are VERY knowledgable. Stay humble, attentive, and do not give up! Only the dedicated and persistent survive.

Good luck.

PS, I know you wanted a different answer, but trust me, you'll be a better filmmaker if you wait and learn first. The camera will come in due time...Then again, I know a few guys with no experience who just went balls out, bought a DVX and now... well, now it collects dust in their closet because they realized filmmaking is not their passion...anyway.

Re: i need help!!!!

Aaron, check out the martketplace here. there's people selling their DVX cheap. You better hurry while supplies last. If you look in the right places $3000 will get you alot. Peace!

Re: i need help!!!!

If you are brand new to this then why jump into a DVX? That's a big commitment. Why not get a less expensive camera? Why go all out for a G5? A very respectable PC setup with Vegas, Premiere or what have you could be had for less than $1000.

*wow, four posts went up while I was typing that... oh well, my point still stands.

Re: i need help!!!!

damn, this thread went fast. I thought I was solid on mine, but I guess most dissagree and want you to go buy one. Well, as mentioned, most here are more knowledgable than I, so, take whatever you can from these responses and good luck.

Re: i need help!!!!

I agree with TC on this one. It's not the DVX that makes the film maker, a film maker can make a film with any cam. go cheap for now and get enough gaer to make a film. ie used 1 chip, pc and nle. then when you know, your piggy bank should be full enough to to get more sophisticated toys. I've been building my setup for five years and it's all obsolete now but I can still produce a first class film with it, but I procrastinate all the time saying I need this and that and on and on. Sooner or later I'm just gonna get of my duff and do it.

Aaron, this is a prime example of what I explained at the top of this thread. No, don't even buy a 'cheap one', save the money before you decide this is right for you. Are you in So. Cal by any chance? Drop me an e-mail when you have the time. If you're looking for some experience, maybe I can help with a gig. If of course you're not a whack job. Let's chat first.

Re: i need help!!!!

Ah, should have checked your bio, would've seen you're in TX. Anyway, well then, you've been on some films, guess you've been there-done that, so hell, go buy a camera! I thought this was your first time out, my appologies. Get a cheapy I guess, or save some dough and get the DVX. In any case, good luck, man!
