I need help with Wireless Microphones

I am going to be shooting a 20 DVD series. This guy is a Health Guy and going to be talking I would say 14 dvd's are 20 mins in length and 6 dvd's are 51 mins each. I was thinking about running a boom, but dont think it will come out, being I need a large area for shooting. Not sure. What would be a professional least inexpensive product for my shoot and if I did end up going the route of boom, which boom and what would I need o get into the cam?

thanks.

If the guy is going to do a lot of talking... than put a wireless on him. Preferably use a Lectrosonics system. If you elect to use a boom you have to be constantly cognizant of where the boom is in order to keep it out of your shots. If you keep the boom a distance away from your talking head you run the risk of getting less than pristine audio.

An inexpensive Lectrosonics lavalier system will run you about $1,800. They run considerably higher in cost for higher quality.

As far as a boom is concerned you can go with a Ktek pole, a Sennheiser 66 shotgun, a Rycote shockmount and you're in good shape.

I would advise having an audio operator with a portable mixer on site. This allows you (the shooter) to concentrate on the pictures and someone else can setup and monitor the audio.

If Lectrosonic is a bit much on the budget, may I suggest Seinheiser G2, around $500. I personally used it on a similar project successfully and had good results (I dont know what a pro audio guy thinks what is good but) ;) ...
Also, to be on the safe side, it would be wiser to use wireless on one channel, and the boom mike on the other channel.... Definitely have a sound guy, to much hassle to shoot and to listen in the same time ;)

I have the G2 and it's a great value. The sound is very natural. I agree that 2 different mics into the 2 channels is the best way to go. It's always great to have choices in post.
cheers,
Sam

I second that, and I have also noticed that having a boom on CH.2 increases the feeling of presence in the room, so the sound is not too sterile. Just mix it in post to your liking. It will also bail you out if the lav rubs against clothing or phases out and you don't hear it. True, mixer is great and allows you to go in to the camera using LINE input and bypass the camera's preamp circuit. :)

Having just made 6 DVD's, I can understand the ordeal of making 20. God bless SurJones.

I've been using an ATW-101 wireless diversity system, with Countryman B3 mics, for more than six months now and they not only sound as clean as the Lectrosonics 185's I was using but they've been rock solid as well. Not a single dropout yet.

Their tech support people have provided excellent service and advice, too.

Thanks so much for actually answering a question you guys. I got a loyt of information out of this post for a change. I tell you I get tired of bouncing from post to post trying to find a real answer. I'm sure others will agree.

You can make a good on camera receiver mount with teh stuff sennheiser gives you with a G2.

Please remember you can pipe a shitty mic into a great wireless system and get mediocre results. If you get the Sennheiser, spend some bux on a countryman B6 or a Sanken lav. You'll be way ahead of the game.
