Hey all

I just recently posted my HVX200a on craigslist as I prefer dealing locally. I use craigslist all the time and up to this point Ive only sold items of much less value. The HVX is the most expensive Item I've sold On craigslist and I just got an offer from a potential buyer and they want to meet tomorrow to check out the camera and pay cash. My question is, is their a suggested way to go about meeting with someone when dealing with such a pricy Item in terms of avoiding getting mugged lol? Can any one help me out? Where should I meet this guy? I assume a public place but what public place can I bring a big camera bag/camera and start showing the guy that it works? And lastly what, if any, are the precautions I can take to make sure I don't get scammed some how. Sorry if Im being a bit paranoid but I appreciate any help. Thank.

Hire a sniper, have him posted on the rooftop across the street, sit near the window so he can keep an eye on everything & take out your contact if things go south.

Seriously, take a friend with you. Don't take a check, cash only. If you're worried the bills might be counterfeit, borrow one of the special markers from the cash register & check for watermarks. Let your buyer know it's nothing personal, you just want to be cautious, just as he is with wanting to check out the gear.

EDIT: Coffee shop, as David suggests, or a Panera. Done several Craigslist meetups there.

Chances are the buyer is worried about the same thing! haha. Just find the nearest creepiest dark alley. Ok im kidding lol. Seriously tho, a coffee shop or something would suffice. Think of if you were meeting someone for a date for the first time. MY concern as the buyer would be if the camera was gonna work properly, if there has been any service done, and if the camera messes up if there is a warranty. Having your camera serviced before it goes out for sale easily doubles the value. Especially with a work order and warranty at a reputable repair facility. Hopefully you got that covered. Good luck!

meet at the police station, it's in both parties best interest, and if he's not willing, then you have your answer right there.

I sold a newish laptop at a Starbucks. Visibility, witnesses, and mutual ground. Always try to meet somewhere that forces them to drive a little ways from home. (Granted, they may lie about where "home" is, but it's still a good idea.)

I like the idea of a police station, but that would have to be done outside, no? I don't think the police would agree to being a site for commercial transaction.

I know what your saying, but heck, it's in essence the tapayers too. :) Im thinking if you were to pop in, and explain them the situation, thay may be fine with it. At least my town has really cool cops. They worked with me on a feature, and provided, cars, cops, and blocked off roads. they were really awesome like that.

Thanks everyone for the great info. I didn't even think to bring someone else along with me but Ill have to do that and again this might just be me being paranoid but i didnt even think about using the marker to check the bills. hmmm? are those specific gold markers? can i buy one somewhere? lol this is of course assuming that he pays with hundred dollar bills? Thanks again.

+1 for the sniper, never do a CL deal w/o one.

go somewhere with cameras, Coffee shop, supermarket parkinglot (not at night), get there tag # just in case. but i'm paranoid. keep in mind, they may be just as skeptical as you, so just be cool.

$5 to $10 bucks for the marker - but keep in mind, it doesn't check for "washed" bills, where the counterfeiters have taken a $5, stripped the ink off it, and made it look like a $100 or something. That's why you'd need to check the watermark as well - I don't believe that can be washed. Just make sure the watermark matches the bill.

In all honesty, you likely won't have an issue with counterfeit bills, but if you're the paranoid type, it can't hurt to make sure.
