I Need a Crit

Hey guys, I recently started doing some small web videos for a local magazines website. I need crits.

I know the stuff isn't graded.

I would like your guys opinions on stuff like the straps, audio levels all the technical stuff as well as editing etc. Everyone at the magazine is happy, but they don't really know the diference between good and bad either.
I don't really know what the rules are about this sort of news coverage and if i'm doing it right. Should i have more emo establishing stuff?

Don't be shy, tell me what you think needs changing/fixing.

Its mostly Skate and BMX footage

Thanks

Jimmy

seems very good! one thing i might do would be to trim each trick down as we dont need to see EVERYTHING just the execution of the trick.. so you can cut more between them, it isn't absolutely essential to see the whole run.

that, whoever is subjective and perhaps your client does indeed want the whole run.

The only thing I noticed, however, that is inarguable is the camera is too shaky. You need to work on getting the camera a LOT smoother. Check out the guy with the sony (i think, or canon) in front of you in some shots, he keeps his camera rock steady and smooth, even while goign for the agressive angles.
Even in stationary shots your camerawork is very shaky.

And you COULD go in for more agressive angles (thats what skaters like to see), but that is also subjective.

[ecdit]The above was in reference to the first video, i have now watched the otehrs

the second is perfect.. (although they are all a little too shaky!) the third... i felt that the music didnt suit the editing. for videos like that, try and edit to the music. use the music as the driving force for the tone of the clip and adapt the work around it. Makes a much more enjoyable viewing experience.

Rad thanks, Filming skate comps is better exercise than surfing, the long shots are from someone else who is doing an internship, so we both learning, but yeah i'm trying to get smoother. DIY steadycam or fig rig in the pipeline...

Music was a hard one for the last vid, have so many guys that my music options dwindle really fast. And in terms of editing to the music, yeah it always helps i usually do, but the client wanted it done by the following morning to upload so it was a super hack together drop music over it sort off thing. (crap, i sound like i'm making excuses!)
But camera shake is an issue and i'll work on it.
Thanks so much for the imput.

completely understabndable it isnt something you're doing on your spare time. sometimes sacrifices need to be made, especially with time constraints. I have some experience with editing short films and know how many hours it takes.

With all that criticism being said, overall they are great. Especially if this isnt a HUGELY mainstream website like google.com. If i were a visitor of the site (link?) i would definitely enjoy those videos. the second and third are very good. first is pretty good but no real amazing skating or action goin on. I was entertained while watching them.

I thought they were good....pretty much right on line with alot of the other skatboard videos out there. I agree with the other comment that they are alittle too long and I found myself to start to lose interest towards the end. Also, need to boost the audio of the vo's, I could not hear them that well over the music.

looks good but for the skating one try not to run around or follow them, instead maybe try to do a slow zoom or something, idk just a skaters perspective

The riot store video should have been at a higher frame rate, it was really moving around too fast for the framerate you were using.

You need to get better skaters, and a biker that does more than a bunch of turndowns.

It's all pretty solid though.
