I need a car for a week in LA

I'm flyin out to LA in a week to visit some friends and check into the job market (i'm moving there in June). i thought I'd be okay renting a car after checking initial prices, but i didn't realize the "under 25" stipulation where they tack on another $20 or $30 per day. I just turned 24, and there's no way I can afford $500 bucks to rent a kia rio for a week. I'd need something from about April 5-10. Anybody have a car they'd be willing to rent cheaply--or maybe just some suggestions on the matter?

If your schedule will allow for it,. plan around using the LA bus and subway system. It's time-consuming but you can get pretty much anywhere in the metro area and valleys.

Do they have Zip Cars or an equivalent company out in LA? Under-25 folks I know here on the East Coast use this as a less costly alternative to rental cars priced with the under-25 surcharge. You can reserve them, and you can rent by the day if you'd like and use public transportation on the days you don't need a car.

I'm giving craigslist a shot. I'd thought about getting a scooter, but my girlfriend is coming with me and I don't think riding two-deep would be too fun if we had to do any extensive driving. Do they have those little electric things that look like clown cars there? They've got them all over at the beach here. I don't know how the whole recharging thing works though

Based upon about eighteen years' daily motorcycling all over the LA area, I implore you not to ride a scooter on the roads while you're here. Just in case the idea resurfaces.
