I need a B Cam for my A7s

As I understand it, the burst goes out as whatever you are set for otherwise, 24p, 25p, 30p, 50p or 60p. So you should be able to get the burst on the Shogun as well, eventually, no?
But the other recorders will never be able to compete with the 7Q when it comes to pure 4K frame rates because of technical limitations.

AFAIK The burst always comes out at 50p/60p, no matter what setting you have. I checked with CD and tried for myself, and that's what the camera was doing.

If the shogun can do that one day then it should be able to record the burst.

It does not. But the FS raw signal is not a video signal but a data signal. So I think it should be possible for the PIX-E to record 4K from the FS700 in the future if Sound Devices decides it's worth their while to implement it (and if the PIX-Es got the horsepower to do it). At this moment their stance is "no comment on future development" though.

If you have an A7s only, it makes little sense getting the SDI version at this point though. The SDI seems mostly useful if your using it only as a monitor or recording HD.
And in many ways the hdmi only version seems like the best solution for the A7s, unless you're fine with putting a huge 7" monitor on a tiny little camera.
They also seem more solid than the Shogun. But since they are not released yet, they will probably have to catch up on the software/functions side with both CD and Atomos.

As you say, the A7s just needs the HDMI one. I think the SDI is quite limited and i doubt they're doing RAW decryption either, not for those prices.

It's perfect for the A7s HDMI though and even does 444 output, which the O7Q doesn't, yet

cheers

To the original poster's comment. Get what you need for this summer. If you need a 4K camera because you HAVE TO deliver in 4K and need the mobility of just using the camera without the gak and do it if it makes sense from a business perspective.

Almost certainly there will be new cameras in the DSLR form factor come this fall that do internal 10 bit recording (beyond the ones already out there). Most people are betting the Sony a7S will be refreshed this fall.

There are a lot of financial implications in getting into another camera with a different mount and form factor to the a7S. Uniformity of batteries, cages, lenses and other gak should play heavily into your decision making. If you intend to stay with Sony and get a revised version of the a7S when it lands, think long and hard about plunking down money for a camera that isn't a match for the Sony a7 series cams.

If you have audio requirements, are you getting or plan to get the Sony audio module, the K1M or the K2M? Will you want BOTH your cameras to have or have the ability to have balanced and phantom powered connections? The Sony a7 series does this in an arguably more elegant way than the GH4.

The Sound Devices / Video Devices recorders I saw at NAB 2015 were still in the development stage. Software was fairly far along but still not ready for prime time. The scope functions were first rate with refresh rates and size of scopes that looked like hardware scopes or along the quality you see on Transvideo monitors. Build quality was amazing and the sound pre module has the same pres as in their 6 series mixer/recorders. I would recommend the SDI version for the versatility but with a DSLR you often want to use it to free you up from the gak, so you can get into tight places and move largely unseen by those being filmed, like at weddings and event situations.

Great response! Really appreciate the advice. I just ordered an Nx1 to test out. I have mostly Nikon manual lenses so luckily adapters are cheap. I don't HAVE to shoot in 4K, escpecially for weddings. For my project this summer in Ecuador I think it could be really useful. For audio, I plan to use a combo of Rode Mics and Tascam 40-d w/ Sennheiser G-3. I guess since my canons never had a headphone out I've just grown accustomed to an external recorder.

Ah, didn't know!
That most likely means the shogun will never be able to do it. Another one up for the 7Q. But at twice the cost it's expected, I guess ;)
