I May Be Switching To FCPX From Premiere Pro CS6. Here Is Why....

I suspect user error. I thought I was experiencing this too, and here are 2 common 'mistakes' users make..

1. When dragging a clip from the event library, you need something selected first. If you click drag on a clip that has no selection highlight on it, you will click-drag a selection of the clip (setting an in/out). This feels counter to FCP 7. I expect to be able to click drag on a clip and drag it, but I can't do that. I have to select something first before I can drag it. After creating a highlighted area, you hover your mouse over the highlighted area, the pointer will turn into a hand, and you'll be able to drag that into the timeline. If you want the whole clip, just click on the clip (without dragging) and the whole clip will highlight. Hover the mouse over the highlighted clip, and again it will turn into a hand, and you can drag it into the timeline. Using keyboard shortcuts to make your selections is much faster than using the mouse to create your selections.

2. Is your tool set to Position or Select? The position tool will allow you to position a clip anywhere in the timeline, without the timeline rearranging itself on you. The Select tool turns on the magnetic timeline (clips rearrange themselves).

Those are the most common things that I've seen when people complain about not being able to move things around.

Otherwise, I would suspect a larger issue (mouse/OS communication).

Would you describe the problem to us so we can help you?

I'm no apple fan boy, matter of fact, I despise the company for many of their business decisions (forced obsolescence being one of them). But I am simply amazed at what FCP X is capable of doing, how fast it is, and it is clear which direction Apple is intending to take it. 10.0.6 is a rock solid piece of software.

Sweet, just 10 minutes in and I lost the ability to drag and drop clips. Very impressive!

I love the responses on here...I was well into searching the 'Net (other people have had this problem) before I decided to tweak the FCPX love fest in here a bit, especially given how I was two clips into the edit when it happened.

So, here's the deal. I could do everything in with the clips, but once I had my selection made, clicking and dragging merely caused the window to scroll, not to drag a clip and drop it into the timeline. I had to use keyboard commands to do this until the background process finished, and once I restarted the issue was gone. Still a very big annoyance, because the background process (copying the clips into the FCPX Event folder) took about 45 minutes to finish.

I was on my trackpad the whole time as well, so no mouse communication issues.

Just use "Q" "W" "E"
Basically Learn the darn keyboard commands.

I think Gary is jut trying to stir up a this or that battle here. As to what he said in post #62, I've never had this problem. First, why are you editing with your trackpad? Use a mouse!
Then, TELL ME WHAT OTHER NLE can make multiple in and outs in a single clip? Answer.... NONE.

I highly suggest rather than trying to figure things out on your own, look into Ripple training or some other online tutorials for some tricks and tips on FCPX. Forget everything you learned in AdobePP or Fcp7. Learn how to manage and tag your clips. Learn the keyboard short cuts. Learn the advances that FCPX offers, it's all ONLINE.

I'm sure if you were using Windows and your mouse crapped out for no reason you could discern and I told you to just learn the damn keyboard shortcuts, you'd think I was being a jerk...which, in fact, you are.

Hey, cookie for you! That's so awesome you've never had that problem! Go you!

I'm not the only one and the fact that such basic functionality can suddenly switch off is not the best first impression your beloved can make.

First, why are you editing with your trackpad? Use a mouse!

What the hell does that have to do with anything? I'm sorry if you're unable to function without a mouse, but some of us can handle basic duties pretty well on the MacBook Pro trackpad.

Then, TELL ME WHAT OTHER NLE can make multiple in and outs in a single clip? Answer.... NONE.

If you think this is the dividing line of FCPX and other NLEs...then I'm ashamed for you.

I'm not paying someone to tell me how to work the program. This is 2012, and I've worked on Premiere, AVID, Vegas, Media 100, and FCP Legacy. If I can't figure out how to do something basic, then there's a useability issue with the interface.

With 10.0.6 upgrade (free) you can have multiple ranges (in/out) per clip. In the event viewer, click a small range of a clip. then click another small range of the same clip. Now you have two ranges (2 in/out points) selected for 1 clip.

To erase the in/outs on a clip in the event library, use the command-X keyboard shortcut.

What do you mean by make multiple in and outs in a single clip?

why don't you just leave my thread? We are not going to change our mind FCPX is the best and we are going to use it, PERIOD!

To drag clips is easy, it scrolls when your selecting ranges. Wait a second and it turns to a hand and then you can drag. If your still having problems it's because Final Cut Pro X doesn't like you. Somehow it knows your talking crap behinds it's back.

I guess you were seeing so much red in front of you that you failed to read my post about the issue? I know how to drag and drop, and I fail to see why you cannot fathom that there could be a bug (though a bug that interferes with the actual interface of the program is pretty significant in my experience). Restarting FCPX solved it. Seriously, calm down. It's a piece of software and Apple is a corporation. I know you like to think otherwise, but dem's da facts.

So far it's working okay after a reboot. The magnetic timeline is great when it does what I need, and not so much when it fights what I want. Right now I'd say it's about 50/50. The stabilization option has been nice for a couple of shots that just needed some basic help due to a wobbly slider, but one clip will have to be done in After Effects because the motion that FCPX gives it looks terrible.

One thing I was worried about was project organization, but I was able to setup a Final Cut Events folder on my G-Raid Mini. That's really nice, so at least I know I can keep the actual files organized like I'm used to.

About half-way through with the edit at this point. It's working fine, but the real test will be doing all the mastering work after the edit is approved, all of which I intend to do within FCPX.

@Gary.
If I were using windows? As in Windows 8 or a PC? Because I do have PC's. And I do learn keyboard shortcuts, at least important and most used ones, while operating any computer or program.

You came in and while having used FCPX for ONLY 10 minutes you said, "Sweet, just 10 minutes in and I lost the ability to drag and drop clips. Very impressive!" . You gave up that easily? Or is the whole program a joke because of that one simply solved instance? Then you state later that, "Restarting FCPX solved it.". So why gripe about it in a post at all? You griped. I noticed....

What gave you the impression that I simply "gave up"? I'm going to finish this project in FCPX one way or another. I guess it just doesn't sound as good to try to rebut me without adding something out of thin air?

Or is the whole program a joke because of that one simply solved instance?

It's a very basic interface handling bug, and it doesn't inspire confidence if you run into it the very first time you ever use it, especially when the suggestion for other people who ran into the same issue was to trash preferences as it was a fresh install.

Then you state later that, "Restarting FCPX solved it.". So why gripe about it in a post at all? You griped. I noticed....

Yes, and instead of making something up, this time you left something out:

Still a very big annoyance, because the background process (copying the clips into the FCPX Event folder) took about 45 minutes to finish.

So, you see, I couldn't restart because FCPX had a background process going on, and I didn't know if it would just pick up where it left off once I was finished. So I had to wait until it was done, but I wanted to keep editing at the same time. Which is why I used the word "annoyance" but never the word "quit".

Hey you guys,

I'm no mod, and I certainly have no sway here, but I would like to say that watching this conversation is rather disappointing. I would prefer if you have a personal beef with each other to take it private. I'm here to learn and to teach what I know. These personal attacks don't have a place here on this respected forum.

Submitted humbly,

Dillon

Fair enough. Though just to let it out, I don't have a personal beef with anyone, though it strikes me there's a curious attitude of "don't say anything bad about FCPX!!!!!" in here. I'm going to share my experience with using it for the first time, and I'm not going to sugarcoat anything. If you want to think I'm an idiot because of any issues I run into, that's fine.

I have no judgments. Again, I'm just here to learn what I don't know, and to teach what I do know (from my post count, I learn much more than I teach). That's what drew me to DVXuser 8 years ago, and that's why I intend to stay. This place has been a step above most of the other filmmaker forums, and I hope it stays that way.

I hope you get your issue resolved.

Dillon

Either this conversation becomes more collaborative and helpful, and not contentious as has become, posts will be deleted.

C'mon.

Help each other.

That's what this place is about.

Yet I'm the ONLY guy that posted a link to a question a user had???.. LOL. And offered places to go so one can learn to drag and drop clips.
Helpful resources for FCPX

Ripple training: http://www.rippletraining.com
FCP.co: http://www.fcp.co

Then our own user Ben B is very good about questions and such.

@ Gary. Learn camera archive. You're diving into a project without much instruction on the NLE. About your first import that took 45 minutes. What codec was being ingested? Did you have transcoding turned on? Did you have the analyze features turned on (color and stabilization)? Are you making proxies? I've ingested hundreds of GB's on a project and with those items deselected it's taken as much as it takes to copy a file into a different folder. Go into your preferences and TURN OFF analyze color and analyze stabilization. Did you do that?
Again, you say it yourself , "It's a very basic interface handling bug, and it doesn't inspire confidence if you run into it the very first time you ever use it,". I see very first time and that stands out. Look at some FCPX training instead of trying to figure it out. You're probably passing up about 90% of what makes FCPX powerful because you're thinking FCP7 or PP. Some of the online courses cost about $50 and take an hour to watch. Some are free and all over the web. And use a mouse!
