I May Be Switching To FCPX From Premiere Pro CS6. Here Is Why....

The ATI 5870 should install without any drivers. I have one and all I had to do was plug the thing into my 09 MacPro

Thats pretty cool, now i wonder if the ATI 5870 would be worth a purchase? there are a few around for 150ish. Is it going to be a noticeble step up from the 480GTX? I know that other than osx related apps and openCL the 480GTX would probably destroy most ATI cards.

FWIW my render times in FCPX and Premiere CS6 have been pretty comparable using a GTX card and Ive spent a few days testing.

Both make FCP7 seem like an overloaded steam train thats about to die.

I agree FCP 7 is the standard for movies but i feel that will slip away considering the power that FCPX and PPCS6 have!

FCP X and PPro do NOT have the proper workflows and necessary elements for honestly doing feature film productions. Avid will keep that market for a long time to come.

Maybe for a billion dollar movie. Final Cut Pro 7 is the choice of most film makers. I have many colleagues who have worked on major motion pictures and Final Cut Pro 7 is in every single editors toolbox.

Also everyone who uses Final Cut Pro 7 has 10 sitting around and just not used as of yet but it's gaining foothold.

as far as media composer, I used it and it was nothing that I had interest in. Premiere and final cut have more features at a fraction of the price.

Avid are crooks. I should know I am a studio engineer of 12 years and I have been using pro tools since 1996. So I know all about avid and all their products.

We're talking FCP X here, not FCP 7. Yes, FCP 7 has been used to do a ton of movies and it is dead. FCP X won't be doing any feature films as far as I can see. I wouldn't call Avid crooks, just behind the times. Still, it has always been the number one NLE for motion pictures. Without Final Cut Server, FCP X has a limited market.

Why do you say that? FCP 7 isnt dead. FCPX is not out of the question for a feature film. I currently am working on a few projects that FCP7 is being used, as well as FCPX. I know for a fact of 2 motion pictures right now using FCPX.

What feature film is being edited on FCP X?

FCP 7 will have no more updates, and those still using it are on borrowed time for now. No new FCP 7 systems are going into anyone's studios.

I honestly don't see PPro or X getting a solid foothold into feature films any time soon.

I really don't care what anyone uses in the end, but I will say that I have "assembly" edited a 113 minute feature (though it was as complete as you could get in a first pass, including sfx, dialogue cutting, some basic color correction, ect.) under Premiere CS5 with a Sony VAIO laptop. It ran well with no rendering for the most part, but there were a few spots in the movie where the video simply would not play smoothly without rendering.

Oh, and these were native .R3D Red One 4K files.

I'm not sure what the missing workflow elements of Premiere Pro are that make it unfit for feature film editing, but I'd like to know.

Perhaps you should have learned some civility in those 12 years instead?

Plenty of studios have them including me. Who knows what apples plan is. FcpX 10.0 was very buggy and just needed help.

with the open cl support and the update of 10.0.6 fcpX is on the fence. I have edited with many programs over the years and fcpX is a few features away from being the fcp7 replacement. Will it receive updates to acquire these features? Who knows if apple is smart then it will.

if you disagree that's fine, but it works for me and others so that's all that matters.

Civility? I have plenty I was stating a fact. I have watched them over the years and their customer support is the worst in the business!

however, I AGREE with everything else you said about premiere! It is AMAZING. It's fast and it's accurate. If anyone says you can't do a feature on premiere pro then it's obviously just an ignorant opinion.

have you tried pp cs6? It's blazing fast. I will still use it once in a while, fcpX has some features that help speed my workflow up that's why I am switching over. I will be using dual systems tho.

A fact? Really, come on now.

I have watched them over the years and their customer support is the worst in the business!

So your personal experience with, what is in your opinion, bad customer service makes them "crooks", huh?

Why do you care so much? Why are you hurt over it? I watched numerous co-workers get shafted over the years. I have seen it many times.

There has been so many times over the last 12 years that I have watched somebody get treated like dogs*%t.

Again why do you care so much? Their customer service is horrible. Period.

Let's move on, please.

This is getting personal, and has gone far beyond the purview of original post.

If you want to carry on this conversation, please do it via e mail or PM.

Thank you.

I just finished a wedding on fcpX. It was the best workflow/organization I have ever had. Truly a great program.

2 things need to be fixed. Audio export and replace ability to a DAW of users choice, and more Opencl support but that is just me being picky.

Great experience I must say.

First few pieces Ive put together has been pretty seamless end to end as well. The media management component seems to be its real trick - works well.

Sound... agree with Corey above. Its the weakest link and I hope theres some changes made. I'd be happy if we could have the option to export OMF and the old send to Send to Soundtrack Pro functionality.

Or if they allowed the option to export and send to the DAW of our choice but that is just wishful thinking lol for now I just use final cut to fix audio that is slightly bad. If its too much than I will have to export audio. That's a pain but let's hope they fix it.

media management is the best! It's so smooth and renders fast compared to fcp7.

X2Pro will allow AAF/OMF export. I'd still love to see FCPX CMX3600 EDL export at the very least. That's one of the most basic things any NLE can export. It's rediculous that FCPX, which replaced their Pro application, doesn't have this natively... Or has this changed in a recent update?

That's a great find! Thanks. I just don't get why Apple doesn't implement this natively. They took out so many key parts of it being a "professional" NLE. For someone to make the switch to FCPX and cover their bases for post production sound needs, they'd need to buy FCPX, EDL-X, and X2Pro: $299 + $99 + $149 =$547 total... I hope they implement this in a future release.

What about change notes? Does FCPX generate picture and sound change notes natively?

another thing that FCPX does better than PPCS6. When i export in PP to my master file, and decide i want to change 1 thing about a single scene and then export it again. PP has to export the whole thing again same amount of time. FCPX once its exported and rendered one time, the next time is way faster. Like 8 min video in FCPX took about 15 min to export the first time. The second time around it took 3 min. So if i make 1 or 2 changes then it will take 3 min plus rendering on whatever scene i changed.

Absolutely awesome!

I'd be careful with this. It depends on what FCPX is doing the export as. I don't know if it still holds true, but in FCP7, you could export a QuickTime reference file, which would work like a normal video file, but was way smaller (and as fast to render as your comments reference) but it was able to do this because the resulting QuickTime file was simply a reference back to the original media. If you gave that file to someone to use, they wouldn't be able to play anything because they'd need all the raw footage that the QuickTime file pointed to.
