I married a photographer

My wife is now official! - we finally had a website put together for her photography business. Her site is simple, but it does its job - it's exactly what she wanted:

Check it out: Full Tilt Photography

Now one of these days I'll actually need to get a new site for my business.
For about 2 years I had a page that said "site coming soon" - i finally took that down and now it's just a logo with some contact info.
I guess I should be happy - I've been too busy to think about putting a site together.

As a side note - If anyone needs any webdesign work done I met a great guy in Austin, by the way.

Very nice! Your wife has skillz. Do you know any single, talented female photographers looking for a guy? I'm in the market... :)

No, I don't....but I know a guy that can build your website and a good photographer that can take your pictures. With those two things you can probably reach your 'target market'

By the way, I'm glad I'm not the only one who thinks she has a good eye - I always tell her she's got a better eye than I do.
She doesn't believe me.

Then again, I'm shooting 24 pictures per second...so I make it up in volume.
:)

her compostition is great. i looked through the entire wedding portfolio and my fav pic is the one revealing the church floor reflection of the bride and groom standing at the altar very classy!!

If it's a business site it's a good idea to check for browser/plug-in compatability and deal with the information in a user-friendly way so you don't hand your potential customer a black screen with nothing but a flash logo.

Agreed. I would not say it is a good website, because i cannot even see it ;)

Only providing a Flash Version does not look professional to me.

A good website is an html website, which is providing an alternative flash version for the people that want to see something that is "fancy/playful".

LOL. You and me both, Luis. My wife loves photography and I keep trying to get her to start a business, but she doesn't like to be paid for her work. She enjoys keeping it in the hobby realm despite my encouragement.

Good luck to your wife on her new endevor. Based on talent alone I'm sure she'll succeed.

Flash only isn't such a hot idea, because people can't bookmark certain pages within the site or save the images. I've gotten gigs from people who've downloaded stuff from my website, forget about it, find it and then contact me again. With a flash website, it looks nice but you can't save, bookmark or go to any specific page in it, and when it comes to your customer, you want to give them the ultimate convenience, not just a pretty image. IMO, at least. Especially when you the site isn't doing anything that couldn't be accomplished just as easily in html.

It looks pretty though :) and her photography is excellent

Thanks for the info guys - all good points.
I'm going to talk to her about the Flash only issue - we'll see how much of a stumbling block it is.

In the end it may be a good idea to have an HTML option.
I know one of the reasons she liked going with flash only is that its more difficult to swipe the pics from the site - and she's actually had a problem in the past with someone stealing pictures she had online and then passing them off an their own.

Granted - its easy enough to do a screen cap to get pics off a flash site if you REALLY want to steal them - but this at least discourages that.

The issue of bookmarks though is a valid concern, and one I hadn't considered.
We'll see how it goes and tweak as necessary...

This is why I love this forum - I threw this up as just a "hey - check it out" sort of thread...I never really intended on getting any useful advice out of it...and here, once again, you guys have come back with alot of good feedback that I never would have thought of.

Thanks

First of all, I don't think there's anything wrong with a flash-only site. We do it all the time where I work... and they're big clients like Disney and others. But it's your call on that one...

Second of all, your wife is very talented! :)

What? There is a lot wrong with a flash-only site. Working with "big clients" doesnt justify anything. I see so many crappy sites from these "big" companies.

First of all, by using flash you just simply keep possible clients away from your service. Not everybody has got flash installed on their computer and they either can not or just dont want to install it. Believe it or not, but everybody can see an html site.

Than you have got the Bookmarks reason. Which is connected to the fact, that most flash sites are a pain in the ass about usability. (A simple link is so easy to use, but hey... lets make some moving and blinking links which are really hard to push.)

Flash is not userfriendly at all for handicaped people. Thats not a barrier free internet...

There are so many reasons for not using flash-only sites. This list could be continued endlessly ;)

Personally, I hate flash. But there's nothing wrong with it. So what if you can't bookmark a site. If you can't remember every single link you clicked on to get to a specific section, then maybe you shouldn't visit the site... maybe you're better off getting a book from the library and using a paperclip to bookmark the page... j/k

Actually, 95% of the browsers out there do have flash... and you can easily implement accessibility for handicapped users. And yes, you can implement bookmarks and browser navigation. Honestly, everyone should learn how Flash can be made to work properly instead of just coming out and bashing it. Yes, I hate flash, but there's no reason to just blindly say it sucks.

If it were me, personally, every page would be white with plain black text...

That wouldn't make for much of a photography site though, would it?

Wow - I never thought my wife's site would cause any sort of controversy.
I'm glad to see at least that the concern is about the usefulness and efficiency of her site - and not about the existence or lack of her talent.
:)

Yeah, that would kind of be a problem, wouldn't it?

No argument about her talent... I'd hire her in an instant!

Im not sure where you got the 95% from. Adobe ?(I think they actually claim 97% ^^) Anyway, it is just not true.

And browser dont have flash. Its proprietary software which means you have to install it aditionally to the browser.

95% means, that only 5% have not installed flash. Just the people that dont have the skill to install flash should be already 5%. Im sure my grandma is not able to install it, but she can browse the web.

How about the companies that dont allow their employees to install anything? They have got a browser, but no plugins. And that is quite common.

How about people with low bandwidth? Download about 1,1MB with a 28.8 Modem?

People using Text based browsers?

People that just dont want to install it.

All these are only 5%? You must be kidding me.

And then we come to the point of the newest version. Do you think all these flash players out there are the newest version?

I am not just bashing flash. I have got flash, I sometimes even like flash for some entertaining stuff as well as I am able to create flash sites. BUT I think it is an additional feature, which should NOT be used as a stand alone site.

At Luis Caffesse... if you dont like us highjacking your thread, I will modify my posts and cut out all the text. Just tell me :)

Oh, and I am sorry if I sound a bit to harsh...that sometimes happens, but I dont mean it.

@topic: did your friend make this page for free? or just a regular webdesigner?

Nomis - I don't see it as a highjacking - I see it as an interesting topic that came out of a simple post - so no worries.

We met a webdesigner through a graphic designer friend of ours who does quite a bit of work with him - so he's a 'friend of a friend' but we paid him for his work like any other client would.

We actually tried to hire a few friends that we have (who are web designers) but they never wanted us to HIRE them, they offered to do it as a favor...and of course when that happens nothing ever gets done because paying work takes priority.
So - after giving up on that we asked around and finally got referred to the guy who wound up building the site for us.
