I Mac w/FCP and external monitor

I just purchased an I Mac to edit HD programs and I'm using FCP. Does anyone have any advice on how I might be able to utilize an external monitor to view my program (basically to eliminate my clients from looking over my shoulder!). I know I can't use a box like the Matrox MXO2 with the I Mac. Any suggestions would be helpfull...

A DV converter box should work with FCP for HD but I can not say for sure. I know it works for Premire Pro for color correction and even static PIPs. If you do a lot of HD motion graphics they might look a little jittery because it will be restricted to the DV 720 X 480 resolution. It should look better than a VGA preview. The converter I used in the video is only $129.99.

A DV converter box WON'T work for HD on a Mac with FCP. That will only work with DV. The AJA IO HD takes over the firewire bus, thus making external storage useless. The V4HD might also. Capture cards and iMacs don't mix. MXO will most likely be the best bet.

iMacs are CONSUMER machines. For professional use, that includes video work with the need for professional monitoring, you need a pro macine...MacPro or MacBook Pro.

Get a long version of the cable JohnStank suggested and use FCP´s Digital Cinema Desktop preview function to output your timline/program for your clients bon a 2nd monitor.

But they´d still sit in your edit room, I´ve used Skype`s desktop sharing quite often for personal stuff and thinking of maybe also try it with a client.
Only good for discussing edits of course, not usable for talking about CC or effects I guess...

Sorry John, but DVI out to an HDTV will only send a COMPUTER signal, not a true video one. So it won't show off the actual video image. The Matrox MXO bypassed the graphics card processing, it actually shut it off and just took the video feed direct through the connections and pulled out the proper video signal. SOmething that cable cannot do.

You are correct. VGA previews are not that hot with Premiere or FCP. I am almost certain some people have out put HD projects using a converter box with FCP but I am not sure how they did it.
