I love my HVX...only

I'm editing on a Mac Book using FCP version 5.1.1. The only way I seem to be able to offload the footage is to press play and log and capture. Am I not loosing resolution by doing it this way? I thought once I plugged the firewire in, I would get an icon and I could just drag and drop the files into a folder that I would than import into FCP. That said, when I plug the camera in via 1394, I get nothing. I've also tried using FCP to import from the camera, but it doesn't recognize the camera either. (only when I press play on the camera and Log and capture in FCP) All of my drivers are installed, so I'm running out of answers. Any help would be totally appreciated.

That's not the right way to do it. There's nothing truly "wrong" with it, it's just inefficient -- and no, you're not losing any quality by doing it that way.

But what you want to do is go into PC mode, not playback mode (playback mode is MCR mode; when you're in MCR mode just hold the mode button down for three seconds and the HVX will go into PC mode). At that point the HVX will become an external card reader, and you can use the FCP file->import->Panasonic P2 option to import the files directly from the card, translating them losslessly into QT files on your capture scratch disk.

Thanks so much, Barry. I wasn't holding the button down long enough apparently. So now, I'm in PC mode - the top says 1394 Host and yet I still can't get to it with FCP Setup is highlighted with Verify checked.

1394 HOST is for when the HVX is controlling a FireWire drive for the purpose of offloading P2 footage. You want to use 1394 DEVICE.

Right -- go into the "other functions" menu and change the PC MODE menu item to "1394 DEVICE". Then PC mode will work for you.

I just totally fell in love with the HVX...thanks soo much. Hope to have some footage up within the next few weeks. One final question, in 720P, should I check the box to have that duplicate frame removed?

Thanks again, I so appreciate this board...

if that doesnt work though: You can change the settings in the camera to use USB DEVICE MODE. then using a USB cable, make sure the P2 card switch on the P2 card itself is in WRITE PROTECT MODE, and once in USB DEVICE MODE, connect the USB cable to the macbook pro and the card should mount, then go into FCP and do the import P2 footage.

My macbook wont mount the P2 card in 1394 mode, only in this USB mode for some reason. But its 100% success rate in mounting.

I think it has to do with the 1394 drivers from Panny being PPC and not Universal Binary.

Thanks again. Do I just eject the NO NAME icons and turn the camera off when done downloading. It seems that's all I can do regardless. Finally, it seems I can't delete all of my clips (just some) in the camera. Should I keep initializing the P2's to delete?

All of your help is totally appreciated. Much learning to do.
