I Know NOTHING on this topic!! So please help me out.

I just bought the dvd to Hostel 2. The only reason why i get DVD's is to wach how they dis all the FX. And in that FX segment they molded alot of the body parts. They molded a hand, nose, leg, heads, and not to be gross but a guys (you know) for a castration scene. The main think I would like to know is where can i get the materials to mold stuff like this because i would love to make a really bloody, nasty horror films. And cna i get these things at your averge art store. Also they used somthing called a cut mold, it was 2 things that fit together to make watever it was u were molding. And then you put the liquid into the 2 things and he got the mold. I think he called the liquid, gelatin.

If anyone can answer any part it would be great. Thanks

The technique you're looking at is called "Life Casting"

A few of the MANY places to get materials:

What you need to do is take a mold of the part you want to copy (hand, foot, whatever) with alginate. You cover the alginate with plaster strips, then remove it. If you're just making a copy you'd probably fill the mold with melted oil-based clay, then make a negative plaster mold from it and fill the plaster mold with your desired casting material... (Silicone, Foam Rubber, Latex, Gelatin, Resin, etc) open the mold and add any finishing touches required.

BrickInTheYard has several videos on youtube:

Also you'd probably do well to get some books/dvds on the topic.

I recently posted a sticky in the special effects forum which has resources that primarily deal with this sort of thing.

You'll find everything there from artificial eyes and hair to casting/molding materials, foam latex, foamed gelatin, etc. Its facinating work but requires very fine details, artistic ability and a lot of patience and time as well.

I'm actually in the midst of some of this work right now..

We're going into production on a vampire short in two weeks. I've taken on the task of creating the prosthetics and props.

All said and done I have to make a complete vampire get up.. teeth, face, ears. Along with a fake head of the same vampire. Two completely torn apart bodies, a severed finger, severed arm (or it might be two arms).. umm.. I think that's it.

I did a test of the teeth modeled on a cast of my own teeth this weekend. The color isn't quite right, but being just a test pair I'm pretty happy with how they came out. It's also the first time I've done an alginate mold, poured a plaster cast, and worked with dental acrylic. ;)

I should also mention that they are a perfect fit and they stay in without the use of any adhesive.

They have all the materials you would need. Also, there are PDF's and DVD's etc. on body casting and all that.

I have been using their materials for some prototyping I'm doing and it's good stuff.

I wanna thank every user that helped me in this thread, all the advice was great. Just a few things, In Hostel 2 they used gelitan that was the color of skin tone. does anyone know where i can get this or how i could make it. It is really hard for me to get any of the pro supplies for molding and SFX because my dad's never to happy about ordering from the credit card so i guess my main issue is getting supplies that will start me off. Is there any type of stuff that can help me in your everyday strore? Even if it's not the best. thanks

You can get everything to make gelatin from a grocery store and/or pharmacy. But, you'd be better off with a better gelatin than knox, which may be hard to find if you don't get it online.

But, you'll need gelatin, Sorbitol, and Glycerin.. then whatever coloring to match flesh tone, and some flocking would help make it look more real by simulating capilaries.

here's some links for gelatin prosthetics:

that should get you all the info you need on gelatin.
