I just said f#$k

You would disagree that if those words disappeared that you could no longer express yourself?

Saying you're a maestro of profanity doesn't mean you couldn't express yourself without those words or that you can't express yourself colorfully with those words. If you didn't have those words and could no longer express yourself - that would = a limited unimaginative vocabulary.

I know, especially a writer of your caliber Callaghan, can express yourself effortlessly, eloquently, entertainingly, and effectively without those words, you're not saying you couldn't are you - because that's what disagreeing with:
"...If you can't discuss films and technical stuff without four letter words, that would suggest a pretty limited / unimaginative vocabulary..." would mean. Disagreeing with that statement would mean: "Take my f-bombs away from me and I could no longer express myself. That's pretty much the extent of my vocabulary."

Anyway, sounds like those that want the f-bombs unfettered will be able to enjoy them soon once Jason makes it so you can toggle the doohicky.

EDIT: Think I get what you were saying - that you can express yourself imaginatively and creatively with 4 letter words. Of course you can. I agree. So would Mamet, Tarantino, and Eddie Murphy. But they could be imaginative and expressive without them too. Especially if just discussing film and technical stuff.

Look.

It's not at all that I disagree with any of dvxuser's policies. On the contrary, I've been a member of countless boards, forums and chat channels for the past 15 years and seen all kinds of bad moderation. dvxuser definetly has a sensible and healthy approach to setting up rules, and I appreciate that. But I do think it's weird that the N-word isn't on the ban list when the F-word is.

Also, it's a well known fact that necessity is the mother of invention and limitation boosts creativity, and as Jack says we can't expect "any sort of freedom of expression on a private forum whatsoever". The limits are written by the owners of this site, and that's fine.
If there's really an easy way of creating a personal setting for switching this function on and off, that's something I'd love to see.
To me, cussing is sticks and stones.

Also, I think it's great this discussion can be held. It's a sign most users on this board are adults, and with the current awful extreme right winds sweeping over Europe right now (we just got a nazi party elected into the Swedish government for christ's sake) I think it's healthy we can talk about things like this.
I know forums where this thread would have been shut down by the administrators on the first page even if it was in their feedback section.

Seconded:beer:

The problem with Carlin's piece there is that profanity gets much of its meaning and power specifically from being naughty and taboo. And being naughty and taboo are why people use them.

If they didn't, any old word would do. You take away the naughty, the words don't mean anything near what they did.

i'm a potty mouth. my biggest challenge is watching my mouth in front of my kids... Not so much b/c I think the words are "bad", b/c I don't... I think the context is far more important... Which is why I don't want my 4 year old (to who, it would be just another word) dropping the f-bomb in pre-school. :)

But, this is a public environment meant for networking and the sharing of information related primarily to filmmaking and the tools of filmmaking. Being large and active enough that our traffic covers pretty much every demographic and many locations around the world, attempting to maintain an atmosphere that promotes mutual respect, and is approachable to all, (while it may ultimately be an unattainable Utopian goal) is still something we strive for, and a necessary counter to an ever-growing membership base, and shifts in demographics, more and more content to sift through, etc.

If we were just a few like-minded folks, then we could get by with nothing but the most basic of rules, no topic is off-limits, and we could all have a blast. Unfortunately, that isn't a reality for us anymore, and compromises have to be made along the way in the interest of attempting to maintain an approachable, productive atmosphere, and one that can hopefully remain light-hearted and fun to engage in in the face of rapid growth. Things that increase the likelihood of friction amongst the members tend to be where those compromises are made when it comes to general discussion.

The way people behave in general in the pseudo-anonymous world of the internet, and the general maturity level shift as a result of changing demographics (on this site and the internet as a whole, imo) is a challenge while trying to maintain a productive, but fun atmosphere.

p.s. isn't poo poo like a dvxuser classic these days? I'd almost be sad to see it go to be honest :)

yeah I remember when they first turned it on and the Mods gave us a couple of days to get the giggles out of our system, intentionally using poo poo over and over.

Also - wasn't the primary reason we implemented it for search engines? I think Jarred or Barry told me that. Would toggling it off for some people make the swears turn up in search engines?

And yes I cus like a sailor too. My wife cusses like two sailors.

nah... Well, I should say, I don't think so. anyone coming here for the first time (or unregistered) would have the default style.... To choose the no censor style would require manual action on each individual members part... It would seem that google would crawl the site using the default style as well, as opposed to indexing multiple styles.

A lot of the results you get from a google search are archived results, which are uncensored anyways.

And, of course when i searched for the f-bomb, the first result I got was a thread with Hudson with about 20 poo poos in a single post :) hahah

But I do think it's weird that the N-word isn't on the ban list when the F-word is.

Truthfully, that word doesn't even need to be on the ban list, b/c if someone came in here spouting hate speech, it would get seen, reported and that person would get banned outright more than likely and their post nuked... If someone uses that word on here, and did so in a derogatory manner (as opposed to addressing the use of it in a creative work, etc), there would not be an acceptable censor to allow it to remain standing... it would go away entirely as would the person who posted it. the f-bomb can get thrown around pretty loosely around here... The "n-word" on the other hand, does not. There is a pretty limited context on this site that the word would come up within a post on dvxuser.

It could be fun to make the n-word say "I love jello in my racist underpants" or something like that when people type it though. Or "I'm racisalist and I want to be banned." or something.

I'm saying that's how I talk; and, more importantly, how I write.
Not as a crutch.
Not for shock.
Surely not for lack of arrows in the old lexicon quiver.
If anything- it is out of love of, or perhaps passion for, all thing colorful.

Also...

The bombardment of continuous subconscious association between fuc and poo poo around here has contributed more to the world of sodomy than dropped soap & Ryan Seacrest combined...

If they make a statement, it could be that one does not subscribe to society's many hypocrisies...
