Hey,

I just got my DVX100AP a few weeks ago and I am now halfwauy around the world in Asia. I just wondering if I could get some technical tips.

Fist question my 2 speed on the handle zoom does not work, but 1 and 3 works. Do I need to bring it to a dealer to get it fixed? Is this a manucfacturers default? I have been taking great care to make sure it is well kept.

Next, essentially I have just turned the camcorder on and played around with it. One thing that is really bothering me is that I cannot seem to figure out how to get a nice high quality picture. The picture from the LCD and viewfinder look as though it is coming from a consumer camcorder. Can anyone help me out with this? What settings should I change, turn off or turn on?? What do I do to improve the picture quality?

What shuttter speed should I use?

Should I use 60i or 30P?
Is final cut express compatible with 24P?60i?30P? 24P ADVANCE?

Thirdly, I plan to do a simple documentary during my stay. Does anyone having any advice I can use with regards to settings or anything else.

Fourthly, how do I time lapse?

Is it necessary that I black my tapes I heard that this is not good. I am only blacing the first 30 seconds.
Finally, any general advice I could get would be awesome

Thanks,
Yue

First, the functions of the zoom speed switch on the handle can be customized. You can change the functionality by going through your menu settings. It sounds like your settings are the default, where one of the switches turns the zoom off. I set mine to include three different speeds, kind of like what you're looking for.

Next, you need to view the footage on a monitor or television screen to see the full resolution and color quality. The LCD, and especially the viewfinder, are not able to display the full resolution of the image and display colors a little differently than what you'll find on a good monitor.

Finally, why not use 24p normal? Final Cut Express will edit it fine. I use a shutter speed of 48 with 24p, but i think the default of 50 is actually about the same. For low light, you might go to 24, but it will give you a smeary effect. For fast shutter speed effects, you can go higher. Unless you're looking for an effect, use the default.

Time lapse is driven by the menu settings, also. You'll need to get familiar with that as you can't just push a button somewhere and turn it on.

The main advice I can give you is to experiment. I've had great results with a number of different settings. I've always been catious about using CineMatrix. Most people say it's better to push the colors in post instead of using it. Also, use zebras when shooting cinegamma to make sure you don't over expose. Do some test shoots under different situations, review them on monitors and with scopes, and then use the settings you like during your shoots. And read DVXUser.com religiously. :)

I think you misunderstood something...There is no way to damage the camera from it being to far away from a TV ;)

i think TV's electrical field affects the magnetic tape...at least during play back....but dont think it damages it.
