I have a Fs700 but I'd like to have RAW, what can I do? (thinking about BMCC)

Hi all,
I own a FS700 form september 2012. I like it but the codec for me is horrible... when I try to make a color correction the quality of the file is very poor.
I know that the cheaper way to have RAW and a more robust codec is to add a CD Odyssey 7Q. But...
1) NAB is near.. Sony will put maybe a new camera like FS700? You know that Sony have dismiss the NEX brand for the still camera... so probably they'll do the same with the FS series...
2) the cost to have the Odyssey the is not low.. and at this point we don't know what sony will permits in the future to CD..
3) A BMCC + speedbooster give me prores 10 bit and RAW file ad a ridiculous price.
4) At this time i'm not very interest in 4K (the client don't ask 4K...it is only useful in crop or zooming frame sometimes..) ...but I'd like to have a wide DR in the file in order to work well in post production.

So what do you think?
thank you!

regarding your problems with codec: expose right, find proper picture style, get a recorder for 8Bit ProRes.
The internet is full of excellent examples shot with FS700 in AVCHD. see some in this thread with great shots
of your mates Gene and Daomay: http://www.dvxuser.com/V6/showthread.php?303722-Your-Best-FS700-Video

If you dont like it or if it doesnt suit you: sell it.

There are a lot of alternatives from BMCC to Canon C100/C300. It depends on your work and personal
need. For me the images for BMCC are great but handling and audio is horrible. Everybody has different taste.
Any camera you will see at NAB will not arrive in your hands before end of summer or even later.
my 2 cts.

The fact remains though the fs700 is an excellent camera its not really oriented for cinema. It wasn't designed for heavy post production or VFX work. What it's great at not many cameras can beat, for documentaries it's fantastic, properly exposed shots come out great with or without cc. I'll admit I thought of some of those things you mentioned but like Clearmond said in his post you'll be waiting a while for any of the new releases coming this NAB. Plus the odyssey q is proving to be a great asset, the images look beautiful. Check out Gene and Daomeys work. By looking at their work alone, if I didn't own the fs700 already I'd seriously consider one. Plus in this day and age my advice would be to concentrate on acquiring more lenses and less camera. You got a great camera, just get some accessories to make it even greater and you'll be fine for awhile.

It's very possible another reason we haven't seen an update to the FS100 and VG30 yet is because of this. For the VG30 I'd imagine the 60mbps for 4K from Sony. And XAVC-S for the FS100 update at best. That's even if it's released which I'd imagine they would. Your best bet is BMCC for RAW. Very doubtful any cam from the main companies will ever release a RAW codec to card (SD, CF, Cfast 2.0 or QXD).

Even if you never bother with 4K, adding the Odyssey7Q to the FS700 makes it a new camera. This month we will release a firmware update that will allow the Odyssey7Q to take the camera's RAW output, deBayer and turn it into 4K video, then perform an excellent downsample (aka super-sample) to HD. The Odyssey7Q will then be able to record this HD signal in a Popular Compressed Codec at 10-bit 422HQ quality. That simply blows away the internal recording quality of the camera. It brings te camera to a new, higher level.

Hi Mitch,
it's a good news. So for popular codec you say prores?
Some weeks ago I read here that the RAW for CD Odyssey at normal speed (like 25p) was not perfect, with some artifacts in 2K RAW. Something is changed?
I can shoot also at 25 or 50p and have a perfect image?
thank you!

I have been shooting 2K RAW on the 7Q and it looks really good to me. Not sure why you would want the BMC. Yeah, it's cheap but it has huge disadvantages, especially since you already own the FS700 and it's about the same price to just upgrade with a 7Q

1) Lowlight issues. I believe BMC maxes out at 1600 ISO. That's really low. S-Log2 has really good low light + Speed Booster = great low light.
2) FS700 has high frame rates. BMC does not. Stuck at 30fps max
3) 2K RAW on 7Q looks amazing.
4) 4k BMC, who knows when it will ever come out
5) 4K BMC has at least 1 stop less of Dynamic Range than FS700 with S-Log2
6) BMC has no built in ND filters
7) My 7Q + FS700 rig is very light and YES, ergonomic. BMC is a crazy design.
8) 7Q is a good monitor
9) BMC has global shutter, but I would not trade that for 1 stop of DR loss like on the BMC. I shoot tons of handheld and rarely have rolling shutter problems.

You put a very strong argument!
anyway the real problem is that in Europe I don't find it! Maybe will be available in around two months..
Can you suggest me a good seller in Europe that have it in stock?
thanks

There is only one way to get an Odyssey7Q in any timeframe. You must get on a reservation list and have the dealer order it for you. Otherwise you could wait forever as others jump in line ahead of you.
