I hate texas.

RC, sorry to hear the problems with your dad's situation. I cannot relate, nor do I have any knowledge of the details you are involved with. Good luck on your continued fight.

The auto tax that went into effect last year is bullshit I agree, but it's not big of a deal to me at this point.

Property tax is... property tax. Don't like it but not much I can do about it except try to get it adjusted every once in a while. What I don't like is having to pay the ISD parts, as I HAVE NO KIDS. Such is life. It is still way better than other parts of the country.

Housing. When you go to california you will have to pay a lot larger price in both rent or purchase for a comparable Texas house. I am sure the utilities are MUCH higher in california, and ........ they constantly have brownouts there in the summertime (something I do not recall happening here in the GREATEST STATE IN THE WORLD, WHICH IS TEXAS).

Your fuel cost for whatever you drive is about .50 per gallon more than what we pay here in Texas. Also that car you just got registered here in Texas may not pass the strict environmental wacko rules in california.

Frankly, the only thing I would really change about Texas is the hot summers (though this year so far has been very mild).

And yes. If someone tries to steal my **** I have the right to shoot first and ask questions later, which is the way it should be.

Really? im not so sure about that.... it may be based on income.

because there are poor families that have been living in houses in brooklyn for 45 years, that were affordable 45 years ago.... but now the house is worth like 2million cause its in brooklyn heights which used to be a Craphole, now its the hottestplace to live. i doubt those people pay 30,000 a year in taxes....

Yeah, but Timur, this is not always a state-wide thing. Often this is a law governed on the very local or community level. I assure you, we aint lying.

oh my God, I need to buy a vowel, where is Vanna?

I actually really like Texas, but I guess my parents deal with the taxes...

If you decide to stay within Texas, I highly recommend Austin. Its film community is rather large and growing. Plus, you will always have somebody willing to team up for a DVXuser fest (myself ).

Austin's the coolest city I've visited in Texas.

And the hottest and most humid.

Oh, the irony.

This summer has actually been a cool one. We had around an inch of rain a day for a month. They had to open the flood gates around all of the lakes here.

It is, however, very humid.

Rc, I just wanted to say I'm sorry to hear about your dad. It's bad enough he had to suffer physically but then to have to fight for what should have been taken care of makes it ten times harder.

About LA vs Portland: You'll be happier with the weather in LA, except for the air quality. But it's a much more expensive place to live. Distances are deceiving on a map because traffic is so bad it can take you much longer to get from one part of town to another. Also, you'll be dependent on one friend in LA, whereas you have several friends in Portland. And those friends say you were made to live in that city, so that gives me a big clue. I live in LA and have friends in Portland too. I would move there in a heartbeat if I didn't have to live here.

Sorry to hear about your dad. It's really unfair. And Barry is quite right in one way - people can always vote with their feet. On the other side of it though, is that you can't always run away - what about staying and fighting for what you believe in? There may come a day where you have nowhere else to run. I mean, what if back in the pre-independence days someone said: you don't like it, find another country? Instead we kicked the Brits out. Yay!

That said, different strokes for different folks. I would never want to live anywhere in the South. There's a reason why they've been backward forever while the coasts developed. It's the mentality... figure it out. Some like that, and that's cool. I don't, which is why I live in Cali.

The South, and Texas in particular has a predatory set up - legally, economically, culturally - really stacked against anyone who is poor or seen as "different". I can't assign blame to politicians, however... we live in a democracy. The folks in Texas and the South in general vote their politicians in... they like it that way. Sure, it's hell - from my point of view - but who am I to tell them how to vote? Look at how the South has voted for 150 years, and where did it get them? Where's all the economic, scientific and most cultural activity at? That's right - the coasts. And why is that? It's pretty plain why. I don't want to get into politics, which is why I'll leave it at this: the proof is in the pudding. East Germany and West Germany. North Korea and South Korea: same people, different systems... and what is the result? Same here: Red states (many in the South), and Blue states. Which ones are the economic engine and which are the basket cases living off the feds? At least the Germans and Koreans have the excuse of being forced. We don't. You don't like it? Vote. And if you vote based on bigotry and fear-mongering, well, you get the same results you had for the past 150 years. There are no "evil" politicians in a democracy - they are all voted in by the "good" people of the state, whichever state it may be. Long live democracy - and long live personal responsibility. Take ownership of the issues - "this land is your land". Peace :)

RC, bummer of a situation.

RC, bummer of a situation.

I agree about checking into a federal lawsuit. Also, might a suit be filed in the state of domicile of the airline, rather than only in Texas?

As for property taxes and corrupt pols, if you really want horror stories, (or maybe some uproarious "jokes"), there are about 8 million of them living in NJ. (Highest property taxes in the nation, mostly due to how we fund public education...and we're only number 2 in public education achievement. Who says you get what you pay for)?

As for crooked, selfish pols, I figure we top all the states, and at every level of government. I dare anyone to say the pols in their state are more corrupt than ours.

We, too, share some aspect of the auto-value deal, i.e. sales tax is charged when you sell a car privately, and the state charges the tax based on their assessment of the value. Supposedly, this prevents situations where one person buys a car, pays the sale tax on it when new, then, when they decide to sell it, is willing to claim the value was less than the sale price, e.g. $ 500 for a car with a market value of $ 20 K. That supposedly would be an inducement to the buyer. Even though the tax was paid when purchased new, the state drags it out charging sales tax again with each subsequent sale, netting much more than the original amount of tax.

Lastly, once able to function on his own, your dad should check out Pennsylvania. It's not a rich state, but they treat their seniors VERY well. (The pols know there are lots of them...and that they vote, so they keep them happy with lots of programs).

Best of luck.

I lived in Galveston TX back in the 80's I was told not to f#*# with the TABC (texas alcohol beverage commision) officers. I saw them in action a few times.

Good luck. I hope all gets better.

I moved to LA from Indiana a few years ago and my utility bills are much LOWER because you rarely need to run the heater in the winter and rarely need to run the AC in the summer (unless you live in the Valley where it gets much warmer).

Unless the car is malfunctioning in a big way it will pass the emissions standards. Maybe if the Lone Star state had some better "environmental wacko rules" of its own my family out in Houston and DFW wouldn't be living in two of the most polluted cities in the country. I think TX is beautiful and I hope it can learn from, and not repeat, the mistakes that other cities and states have made.

No brownouts this year. None expected, either.

Imagine wanting to breath air with less pollutants in it. Oh, the wackiness!
