I got some cash.....

Hey everyone, I just came into 1350 bucks (legally!) and I don't know what to do with it. A decent chunk (about 500 bucks) is going towards production of a short film I'm making, and I thought I'd need to spend that other 800 plus on audio equipment, but my friend is taking care of that by borrowing some stuff from his school.

SO that leaves around 800 bucks in my pocket and I want to spend wisely. My laptop just died and I'm really without a computer. I'm editing this short on my school's computer, but if I was to buy a new computer, I'd either go real low, like 300 bucks on a netbook just for basic stuff, or much higher, for something nice for editing. If I don't spend this money on a computer, it'll go towards some sort of travel fund.

I realize you can't get an amazing editing setup for 800 bucks, but I do have a CC to add a few hundred more bucks on. Anyone know any used, refurbed, or any other deals for an editing computer? Or even something a little better than a netbook for like 400? I'm REALLY leaning toward getting a netbook and using the rest towards a travel budget, but netbooks seem like such a waste of cash. But if I spend any money on a real laptop, I feel like it'd be a waste if it wasn't geared towards editing.

Anyway, it's not pressing, but suggestions are welcome.

In my experience, the best way to spend wisely is to hold off purchasing until you're 100% sure you know what you need. Consider saving the money?

Well, that's the kind of weird thing. I've never had a good enoughh computer to edit on. I like making spur of the moment shorts but then have to edit with my friend on his macbook pro. But it's not imperative that I buy a really good editing computer right now.

However, I DO need some sort of computer because my previous laptop, a horrible HP Compaq, called it quits. So sooner or later I'll need to purchase a functioning computer, and it's either going to be one I can use for editing or a bare-bones one just for internet, Word, email, etc.

Do not get the netbook. You will regret it until you can junk it. When you have complete freedom to edit when you want on your own computer... its such a nice feeling. Keep the money, apply it towards a decent computer. You will never regret it.

Agreed 1000%
If you don't know what you want... then why spend anything at all?

Save it.
Trust me, some day you'll need it.
