I got pulled over last night...

Wow, bosindy's story really got to me. Incredible story teller you are to get your experience across in such a meaningful way. I'm glad that you're alright and Hans - I'm sorry for the loss of your parents in such an unnecessary way.

This thread really is an eye opener and we should all learn something from it, even if its that we should keep a more watchful eye on our friends and family.

Merry Christmas everyone,

Kegan

Dude, best of luck to you. Drinking can really take you over. You have to be able to step back and know when enough is enough. I was in your seat not so long ago. No need for details but I decided it was a miracle I had not already hurt myself or more importantly anyone else. So I decided to give it up 4 years ago. It was the best decision I've ever made.

Quiting is hard, and it sounds like you are heading in the right direction. Having been in the same boat and looking back, I always have the same advice for people who ask me about drinking (dunno if you are asking but I'll give it you you anyway). I tell them to write down all the accomplishments and successes you've had as a result of being sober and the same thing for not being sober. Then write down all the trouble and issues you have brought on yourself as a result of drinking. Something about putting it in black and white makes it a little more real. Then you can always look back at that list and you have a very quick reminder about the value alcohol has brought you. The gratitude and thankful attitude you have right now can fade fast with a few in ya, so best to strike while the iron is hot.

Again, best of luck man. You are making better decisions already. It's hard making a lifestyle change like this and I for one will keep you in my prayers. And like someone else already said, find someone to help keep you accountable.

Indeed. Incredible is that people under alcohol just have no conscience they are under influence. And they end up speeding.

I've lost my license for a month for speeding, but no alcohol. It was a perfectly safe 4 lane- 2 on each side, separated by a small wall.

Actually, this is a topic i've been thinking for a long time. Driving under influence is, of course, a liable offense and a crime, since you are a menace and a danger to others and are not in full control of yourself, but speeding... I mean, in Urban, populated areas, it makes sense, but in freeways/ Highways? I do not believe it. This is crossing the line of freedom. As long as the slow cars keep on the left (over here, at least) and the fast cars on the right, i don't see how this will cause any danger. Just look at Germany, with speeding limit of 250km/h!

And I do believe the driving school teachers are terrible. You never learn how to drive under extreme situations- heavy rain, aqua-planning, Snow, Flat Tire... These are dangerous situations you encounter every day. And you never learn how to deal with it. Some schools even teach with automatic gear cars! Incredible.

Don't send the cop anything, because she hasn't done anyone a real favour...yet.

Sure, you didn't go to jail. Sure, you say you aren't going to drink and drive anymore...after being CAUGHT 4 times, is it? How many times have you done it and gotten away with it?

If a cop lets somebody who should really be behind bars or at least at rehab off the hook, and that person comits the same crime (or another) that costs someone their life or health or loved one, then what favour has been done? Who is to blame?

I sincerely hope you were spared so you could do something to help yourself...and not so in 2 months time you end up ripped behind the wheel, hopping the curb and hitting some innocent kid waiting on a ride...

Not to judge, but the best way to pay her back is to straighten up. Imagine how she would feel showing up to an accident and finding you there, drunk, while somebody else is being zipped up in a body bag.

I hope it all works out for you, but I have to say that I agree with the laws. When I was a kid, drinking and driving was a joke...

...a guy would plow down a family, and then the reporter would say "but he was drunk." It was like a defense in court. "Sorry, you honour, I was intoxicated..."

I actually know people who have one of those breath things you have to blow in before you start your car to make sure you are sober...and they complain.

Like being behind bars would be better?

Giving personal advice over the internet is not something I normally do but you probably need serious help regarding drinking.

You already lost your license for a DUI and yet you still drive. That, in itself, is reckless. From personal experience every drinker has the morning regrets but nearly all of them return to drinking. If you really want to quit, which I think you should seriously consider seeing as your judgment does not look sound, than you need professional help.

Also, that female cop should be fired. What looks like a helping hand now can be a serious problem later if you continue to do what you do and end up hurting someone.

I know I am just a guy on the internet and its generally stupid of me to comment on someone else personally but you really need to take a look at yourself.

This is all true.

I don't have a license because of a DWI I got just a few months ago (my THIRD).

I was hammered.

Again? After 3 DUI's?

As far as drinking goes, that's one I'll have think about, but I honestly don't see myself stopping all together. A cut back to a regular drinking habit is what I'm after here, and I think it's attainable if I really try for it.

Sorry. I'm not buying it. That 'hotty" cop didn't do you any favors by saving you from a major hassle, she did society a great disservice.

Ryan, I have often read your replies in this forum and you're pretty insightful. You're someone whose opinion I respect. Reading that you've had 3 prior DUI's and were pulled over once again while "hammered" blows my mind.

I think you seriously need to consider the fact that you may have a problem.

If you really want to thank that cop you should be doing something more then "cutting back".

Not cool dude. Not cool. Think about it .

You could have died.....But just because the world is full of party animals doesn't mean there are not party poopers ;)

Well, I can also just say, that you need help man. You have serious problems.

My stupid brother was also caught for drinking and driving. He lost his license for about a year. Had to make a medical psychological test and pay a shitload of money. Gladly that opened his eyes. But it was already your 4th time.

I really hope that you will stand by your word and change your life! I wish you the best luck. Don't fool yourself.

Merry Christmas!

What are you talking dude? That would be crazy slow! We don't have a general speed limit at all. You can drive 300km/h if you want to and have a car that is able to do so. Of course only on limited parts of the so called "Autobahn" (kind of highway). Many parts are limited, because it is not safe enough there.

Well…Our premier got busted for drinking and driving in some other country a few years back and he’s still running the show so I guess like him you have some invisible shield eh? I could call you crazy and say you need help, recommend AA and on and on but at the end of the day I shouldn’t have to. I can admit to doing all kinds of crazy crap in my life and in some cases I repeated it until I burnt myself but good. The will to correct ones destructive behavior comes from within when the time is right and never before! I used to drink and drive years ago but stopped due to many close calls. Interestingly, the other night I was coming home from a gig that went well and I was asked if I’d like to stay and have a few. I declined and one of the reasons was that I had a fair chunk to drive home. For fun, on the drive home, I pretended I had gotten drunk and was doing the old one eye driving trip, sort of testing the odds in my mind if you will. About a mile from my home I went through a Christmas roadblock and when the cop sniffed the air in my car through the open window and asked if I’d had any alcohol, it felt really cool to smile and say “not a drop”. Anyway, here’s hoping you got it this time and never find yourself teary eyed on a Sunday morning in a cold non caring jail cell wondering why you didn’t get it the last time and how in the name of god you will be able to live with yourself knowing you killed an innocent family because you couldn’t quit define your own lane. Cabs are way cheap in light of the possibilities eh? Hope you work it out and merry Christmas.

Ditto this. I was going to post the same thing. It's all good if you want to slowly pickle yourself, but a lot of good people die to drunk drivers. Fathers, mothers, families.. last year in Denver a man lost his entire family as they crossed the street in front of him...wife and two kids, mowed down by a drunk.

Ryan I don't have time to read this whole thread now but I read all your first post. Mate I hope you can stick to the "never drinking and driving again" because drink drivers are probably the most lowly people on Earth. It's all fun and games until some innocent person gets hit by a drunk driver.

12 years ago I got pulled over drunk-as-a-skunk. By luck of the draw the cop let me go. Not proud of it but between that incident and a very persuasive girlfriend at the time, that was the last time I drove after even smelling a drink. within a year after that booze lost all it's attraction for me- "growing up" will do that. A beer or two a year is all for me now, while I'm sitting at home.

Can't say it will work for you but the thought of being that selfish and stupid again straightened me out. Your track record says otherwise but for the future of the people whose lives you could ruin, lets hope it's the calling card you needed.

Ask Johnson or Hyten what it takes to get me out drinking. I will not do it if I have to drive....period.

well for now I wouldn't worry about not driving drunk, I'd start focusing on not driving without having a license. if you can't do that, then you don't have much of a chance of doing the other. stop thinking that you're above the law and good luck man.

At least you are trying to make a change...too late for Jim Leyritz, and the woman he killed.

Ask Johnson or Hyten what it takes to get me out drinking. I will not do it if I have to drive....period.

Same here.
Personally I don't understand how there exists a middle ground for anyone.
Then again, to be fair, I don't drink much at all - so one drink is enough for me to feel uncomfortable driving.

No need to recount all the stories here that I'm sure many of us have experienced at some point or another in our lives - and for those of you who don't know anyone that has died at the hands of a drunk driver, consider yourselves lucky thus far. Everyone has a story to tell, it seems - and if the countless people who have been killed by one easily avoidable decision doesn't change peoples minds about driving drunk, then another story from me isn't going to do it.

It seems (as with most things) that until something specific happens that affects us personally, tragedy is something that happens to 'other people.'

Best of luck with your newly turned leaf, Ryan.
I sincerely hope you don't find yourself slipping into your old ways.

If you find yourself in a situation where you're thinking 'well, just this one time", just remember the fear you felt when you thought you were going to jail. As long as that stays fresh in your mind you should have no problem staying straight.

I spent several months in the can for DWI during my 'stupid' years.
Let's say I didn't like it and never did it again. Sometimes it takes that to smarten up. I really dont know what to say, knowing people the way I do.
You get the idea from previous posts. It's your choice and you have to live with the choices you make I guess.

It's your choice and you have to live with the choices you make I guess.

Very true.

But to me, the more important thing to remember is that other people have to live with the choices you make as well.
And they don't have a choice.

Just keep that in mind next time the key hits the ignition.

Yes, that's what I'm implying. We all know it. Are you willing to live with killing innocent people because of the choices you make, is the question that people need to ask themselves.

I'm saying that is part of the choice. But it's good to document the facts I guess and say it right out loud.
