I film skateboarding. Is this the best camera ?!?!

I'm currently filming and editing skateboarding videos with my canon gl2. I'm fixing to sell my camera. Is this considered an upgrade or is it more of a transition? I'm looking for absolute superb picture quality and sharp sound. I don't think the hdr-fx1 is for me since HD causes too much of a mess when editing. I know if I get a dvx-100a I'll probably have to shoot 60i but can I make it more like film by filming in 30i, would it look noticablly better?

Alot of my friends are pro skater friends... honestly, they are absolutely happy with VX-1000 with Fish eye.

The trick?
FISH EYE FISH EYE FISH EYE
WEIGHT
SIZE.

They used my camera once and said it was too heavy to skate with(it didnt even have a wide angle or other lens on it and had the small battery), took too long to setup, and said "The Quality was bad because it can't make people look big in the middle of the frame(aka Fish Eye) :-/
...of coarse. I was appauled! lol. But hey... they're the viewers. All they kept saying was how the VX1000 was so much better. But they didn't understand that it was just some $120 lens that made that look they wanted. Blehh...

So I looked into the Century Optics Fish Eye Ultra... it's over $600.
They honestly don't know or care about the difference between my DVX100a and the VX1000's.  I mean yah, they can tell the difference. But to them it's not that big of a deal. All they care about is making a 5 inch curb looking 3 feet high as they bust a 360 kickflip nose grind and it takes up the whole entire screen.

Where's TC? Doesn't he shoot footage of himself falling off his board?

i do shoot skateboard snowboard and wakeboard video in 30P and 60i with the dvx and it's look very nice. Just get the century optics fisheye on it. It distord the image more than the vx1000/mrk1 setup :o
Now, more and more parts of pro skateboarders are shoot with dvx while other prefer 16mm.

I;ve been finding just the opposite. The skaters I shoot are tired of fisheye since it has been way overused. They are into film look now.

Last week I grabbed some shots of a skater. Wwhen he review the footage he instantly said "hey, that looks like film! cool!".

So, the fisheye is still a great tool but don't overuse it.

yes I agree with you... skaterboarders and snowboarders are now going with film look like DVX does simply 16mm cameras.

forgot to ask you Hans which setting do you use? 24P? 30? and which shutterspeed.

i skate and love to be filmed with the dvx100a, looks so professional, the vx1000 looks "ok" but almost looks cheesy compaired to the dvx100a

Depends on the shoot. Shooting 30p works a little better than 24p when the action picks up. Less jumpy, but only slightly.

Also, If I need to do some quick a dirty work that I will have to edit quickly, then I shoot 30 so I can use my Matrox setup (stinkin' thing doesn't handle 24).

If I plan on a slo-mo shot, then I'll use 60i so I have the extra frames to work with. Lose some detail but it works out when slowing down.

Shutter speeds jump around depending again on action, lighting, etc.. Too high and I don't like the sharpness of the grabs. It starts to feel more digital rather than film.

:D

I blame 411vm for ruining the fisheye. ;) (or at least everyone that submits footage to them w/ the fisheye.)

(which is everyone)

(on second thought, EVERYONE killed the fisheye.)

I agree with hans, 30p will work better than 24p. 60i will work the best, because it gives you so much flexibility with cutting. But many people don't like the look. I think it suits skating, but that's just me.
