I dont know whats going on

i'm sorry if this is a topic previously covered in a thread, but i'm living in south east asia and the internet connection here is awful, so i thought it would be quicker to just post my problem.

my camera when i record is somehow mixing the horizontal images. the image is fine in the viewfinder while recording, and then when i play it back (on my camera or on any vtr) it is somehow jumbling the images. for example if the screen was divided like this:
1
2
3
4
5

it looks more like this
1
4
3
2
5

i know this is a strange example but bare with me. its not artifacting i've seen other people make posts about. i can play tapes that werent shot on my camera and they play fine. but any tape i've shot on my camera, recent or old, does this. does anyone know what the problem is. is it easily fixable. my problem is that i am working now in myanmar and there are no service centers here, so i have to get it out of the country to get it fixed, which is ridiculously expensive. and the mack warranty people are making me jump through hoops to do this, and telling me it will take a week just to see if i can have it fixed there and not have to send it to the states. sorry i'm ranting. so i'm hoping that it is something i can fix myself, even though i doubt it. or that i can get a better understanding of what the problem is. can any of give some advice. please.

Unfortunately you can't fix it. I kind of understand what is the problem (head switching problem), but I'm sure that is a qualified techo job.

it's NTSC and all my tapes should be ntsc. i bought them at B&H with the camera before i left. for awhile it was artifacting, you actually gave me some tips on that last time. thank you. i fixed it but now this. i think i'm going to have to send it in. thanks bluespider.

panasonicNZ-
could you explain to me what headswitching is. and do you know is that considered a manufacturer defect, or will i be footing the entire bill on this? thanks.

I had a problem sort of like this. It wasn't switching them like you said, but if the screen was aligned like you said:

1
2
3
4
5

It was doing something like

1
Blue
3
Blue
4
Blue

Where it would have blue horizontal strips across. I sent my camera to Fox Valley Video Supply. They were great, didn't pay a thing, all covered by my warranty.

Hope that helps,

TJ

it sounds like a similar problem to mine. its good to know that the warranty should cover it. thanks tj.

Sal, as far as I can tell, your problem seems to be different of TJ's, PROVIDING you are using brand new tapes. TJ's is an obvious case of dirty video head or broken chip. If you are using a new tape with a dirty head, then you get those blue/black stripes instead of the video. On an reused tape, the blue stripes will be replaced by the old information on the tape which is not erased by the faulty/dirty chip. If you are using new tapes and you get the picture mixed up like you described it than it's a syscon board trouble and there's nothing you can do about it - you need to send it away to be fixed. As far as I can say, if this is the case and the camera is still under warranty, you shouldn't pay for the fix. The heads problem is another issue and we treat it on a case by case basis, but this might be different for other countries.

do you know how long that takes to fix. there is someone from my office going to bangkok early next week. and i'm going to have her take it to the panasonic service center in bangkok. what it does if i play a tape that i didnt shoot i get artifacting of previous images across those same bands that i described before. so-
1
artifacting
2
artifacting
etc.

if i play a new tape i shoot on my camera it gives me that mixed up screen when i review it that looks like
1
4
3
2
5
etc.

does this make any sense.
