FX6: I can see again!

I'm not saying it is awful or as bad as other country, it's just not something I particularly enjoy or would choose to listen to when there is so much other stuff l like listening to instead. To each his own.

I mean, I listen to all sorts of things. I actually don't know that many Johnny Cash songs. But the greatest hits of any genre are inevitably worthwhile. I listen to far more hip hop than I listen to country, but it really depends on my mood. Here's a country song I wouldn't have thought I'd like. That's the beauty of Youtube Music bringing me new material:

Okay, I could listen to a little Johnny Cash for awhile, but this Don Williams stuff is absolute cheap rubbish. No thank you. Why eat a hot dog when you could have a steak?

do you eat steak every night? it's more like going for mexican or chinese. maybe you have a preference but they're just different. what I listen to at any given moment is just about my headspace. but there's definitely "steak" to be had, like the O Brother Where Art Thou soundtrack, which the internet tells me is bluegrass, country, gospel, blues, and Southern folk music

People often try to figure out what type of music I'm into and they don't believe I listen to everything... Maybe it's because I used to be a musician (drums/percussion). Musicians typically have catholic taste in music. Like how Paul Simon was listening to bootleg recordings from South Africa and decided to hop on a plane and make a record there. Graceland, one of the greatest albums of all time.

Abe, it'd be a waste of time for me to attempt to explain what specific music I like best (mostly classic rock, jazz, electronic, symphony, and movie soundtracks). So, I'll save us both a lot of time and just say I have strong feelings about what I'll spend my time listening to, watching on TV, or reading. I have zero time for crap that does not appeal to me. I'm the direct opposite of Jimmy Fallon who seems to like everything. Only a moron has no discrimination and can't tell the difference between quality and rubbish. However, you are exactly right that I don't want to always eat steak, but that doesn't mean my range must go all the way down to hot dogs, baloney, or Dominoes pizza. You can have standards and still have plenty of variety.

As I type this, I've got the Oblivion soundtrack cranked up on my stereo and that is steak!

what jazz do you like?

Oh, I'm not a big enough fan to rattle off the all names or songs that I like best. But I know my list would include Miles Davis, Coltrane, Monk, Wynton Marsalis, Vince Guaraldi, etc. There's a FM station out of Florida I like that streams jazz 24/7 I can listen to anywhere from my phone and iPad. I rarely know what the song or artist is. https://www.wucf.org/listen/ I also enjoy listening to live jazz at a lounge, outdoor convert in the park, etc. Again, I don't know who or what I'm listening to, I just like the music. Oddly enough, I don't like the jazz channels on Sirius.

BTW, I assume you've seen Whiplash? I love that movie. I think I've watched it twice this year already when I've seen it running on HBO. That is film making at its best.

I cannot resist this one. The first job I had as a documentary soundman was on the film "Johnny Cash, The Man, his World and his Music" in 1969. It was, and still is, one of the best documentaries ever made about a musician. The crew consisted of just three of us, the cameraman, myself and an assistant to load mags. I did all of the recording for the film with a Nagra 3 and a couple of mics...that was it. We spent about three months with Johnny Cash on the road and at his home. It was a formative experience for me at a time when I was just beginning to work in film. Around the same time I did sound for a feature by Brian DiPalma, "Hi Mom" starring Robert DeNiro. Being on the crew on a feature was boring compared to working on documentaries. I never did another feature but went on to shoot and produce many documentaries over the last 50 years....and I loved every minute of it.

Hj, ahalpert, Do you know Where I can find folk and classic Afirca music?
I was looking for it for a while,

Doug, your list of don't likes could have been written by me. Also your taste in music. I'm worried you might be a long lost brother my father didn't tell me about!

That would be funny. Maybe a DNA test is in order. More likely it is just a matter of great minds thinking alike. Some people have taste, and others don't! :)
