I believe in Plasma!

Yeah...there have been no more burn in issues with plasma now for a number of years running.
Maybe I should qualify this statement by saying.."not as bad as it used to be."
Our NASA counterparts recently replaced all of their plasmas with LCD monitors. One of them was used as a teleconference monitor...which had the same image turned on it since around 2006. The eventual burn in image was difficult for me to see. It was not nearly as bad as some of the issues we've seen in older plasma models. The way I understand it is that it's much better today.

True. But any burn in is bad burn in. Same thing with a dead pixel in an LCD. It only takes one to ruin the experience.

For me anyway.

I've got a 42" panasonic. The color reproduction and motion are way better than any LCD I've come across. Black levels were great when I got it, but after the break in period they've lightened up a little. No major issue, but worth noting. It's also one of the few that resolves 1080p upon motion. Most TVs (LCD especially) drop nearly half their resolution when faced with quick on-screen motion. I've seen temporary burn-in on mine. It was really faint, but ive noticed it after leaving a Blu-ray menu up for like 2 hours. There was a slight imprint of the title after the screen went black (my girlfriend couldn't see it, but I could), but I let the movie run for about 10 minutes and it was gone. It's a shame a lot of manufacturers are moving away from plasma. Even the new LED LCDs don't look nearly as good in my opinion, especially in regard to motion. Enough with the interpolation. 120Hz and 240Hz looks terrible. I could see a tamer going that route, but for average tv viewing, I'd say plasma all the way.

I'd only recommend LCD over plasma for serious gaming or sports bars

I was hesitant, but finally was sold on a 42 inch 1080p Plasma. And now, I LOVE them!

Yep. Plasma can be addicting. I bought one of the Panasonic v10s a couple of years ago. Broke it in nicely, then got the update that fixed the THX mode. It just kicks ass. My wife would rather watch blu-rays on our plasma than go to the movies. And that's saying something -- she's really into movies.

If you are into movies, plasma is hard to beat. Especially if you have a room where you can have nicely subdued lighting. If you like a good solid believable black, lots of detail in your shadows and highlights, good smooth tonal transitions, etc. then plasma is for you.

That said, plasma is not for everyone. If you can't use your TV in controlled and subdued room lighting you may find that plasma isn't bright enough for you. And it has the image retention problem (which is *not* the same as burn-in, which doesn't happen with modern plasmas without a good deal of effort on the user's part). So if you're a gamer, or if you just like to turn on ESPN or CNN and leave the set on hour after hour (with those nasty logos), plasma might not be your cup of tea.

But if you want to watch movies, a plasma with a 96 Hz refresh rate (eliminates 3:2 pulldown with 24p material) is well worth considering IMHO.

I bought my 50in Plasma a little while ago...and even if the contrast/brightness at a moderate level, it's still brighter than most TV's I see, with lights on or off. It overpowers sunlight no problem, and burn in has never been a big issue. When it's gotten close I've just popped in a 16x9 film or 1.85 film and used the zoom function on the TV so the pixels that had either black bars on it or whatever else are forced to activate and "work" with different colors. That solved the problems...and I haven't had to do it anymore really.

Plasma or die for me...unless LED's drop in price and become more popular.

You got a new house Brandon...I'd go full on home theater with a screen and projector. There's no substitute. Plasma is nice for the bedroom though.

Can't afford that :) Besides, I would rarely use it... I enjoy the actual theater experience too much...

It's less expensive than you think. My whole theater cost me under 2000 bucks. The screen is just paint. An entry level 1920x1080 HD projector can be had for around 1,000. Nothing replaces the actual theater experience but, for rewatching great films, and seeing old films closer to the way they were intended it's awesome. Also, it doubles as a mixing room. My theater has brought me much pleasure. And playing XBOX on it is fantastic.

Still too expensive :) plus like I said I would rarely use it... besides, I don't really have a room suitable, unless I did a lot of work (which costs more $$)

I always look at home viewing as just that... and theatrical as just that. I don't find myself wanting the two to mix.

I use a Panasonic Pro Plasma in my edit suite - but still like the look of the Bravia for TV watching.

I haven't read the whole thread so I don't know if this has been discussed. Some of The new generation of DLP LED TV's are just amazing to watch movies on. I have a Samsung 67" that just blows my mind how close it is to watching a movie in the theater... I have a very good sound system in place as well, and it is set up in a theater room in the house... We really enjoy this TV. We really never have to go to the movies lol... Plus I need to make it pay for itself before I can go to a movie...

We showed a Bluray of Avatar to some visiting family members and they were totally just blown away...

Do you believe in plazma in a young girl's heart
How the picture can free her, whenever it starts
And it's magic, if the plazma is groovy
It makes you feel happy like an old-time movie
I'll tell you about the plazma, and it'll free your soul
But it's like trying to tell a stranger 'bout LCD...

I was put off buying a plasma a few years ago, mainly because of the burn in fears for games, so I went with an LCD.

Now if I were buying a second TV, I'd probably go plasma as they seem to have a slightly richer palette.

LCD is certainly nice though. Never was a fan of the projection HD sets, at least not unless I needed a mega-sized screen (65 to 70+ inches).

I got a Panny plasma and absolutely love it. When cash allows this one will go into the loft or basement, and I'll replace it with a larger Panny plasma. Everything on it looks how I expect it to look... blacks are ultra-black... contrast is off the chart... motion is realistic instead of exaggerated... movies still look like movies instead of documentaries of movies.

Very very happy with plasma... no doubt the next one will be plasma too.

Nothing wrong with LCD... my brother chose a high-end LCD and it looks great as long as he doesn't switch it into "wacky-motion" (120hz)... but still, plasma = pleasant and natural.

You should sell that jingle for a Panasonic Plasma commercial. I'm sure someone here can initiate the transaction.
