I Am Quitting Smoking Monday.

Best of luck to you. I quit January 6th (a little late meeting my resolution) and haven't had a puff since. I made a list of all of the things that disgusted me about being a smoker and would just go down the list in my head when I was tempted.

I kept telling myself "this is just a stupid fu^*%ing addiction - smoking itself is not pleasant. THe only pleasure I'm getting is in satisfying my addiction for fifteen minutes - then I'll want another one. Cigarettes stink, make me cough, dry my eyes out, yellow my teeth, make two flights of stairs feel like Mt. Everest, etc., etc. So, I don't really want to smoke, I just want to satisfy this addiction. If I can hold off - the addiction will go away..."

Somehow that helped. Staying away from bars and even alcohol helped alot, too. It's hard to be strong when your defenses are down. Again, good luck!

Every reason that you just listed that you hate smoking seems really valid, and I understand it.

I was outside smoking a few minutes ago (hey, I have until March 4th) and I was going through all the times that I will miss smoking:
When I first wake up
When I walk the dog
Driving to work
Driving from work
While watching baseball
Before meals
After meals
After sex
but more than anything, and this is what is really driving me crazy, its those breaks that you can only take at work if you are a smoker. I love getting up from my desk once an hour and going to go smoke.

That's what's hard, and I'm not even slowing down yet. I do have a solid quit date in stone though. That counts for something, right?

Jeremy

Congrats. You know my story:

Carton a week to NADA. It's easy. The 72 to 96 Hour mark is critical. After that, the chemical is 100% gone and it then comes down to mental strength. I did not stay away from bars or drinking or caffiene or sex with donkey corpses; I figured I was quitting smoking and not quitting all of those things (particulary the necrobeastiality)

Stay with it. I was a 22 year smoker and haven't had a single puff. And I feel great. I swim 1000 Meters (almost a mile; working up to a mile) twice a week, I run about 3 Miles a week, my basketabll game has gotten much better (I'm 36 this month and still run with the young dogs).....

You can totally do this. And you know what? You need to relish the pain. You need to want to feel the withdrawl. **** all that smoking aids and cessation patches. Are you quitting or prolonging it? QUIT and be done. Don't sit around with NICO in your system for the next 90 days.

DO it !

You the man !!!

Im here for you !

(Now where is my heroin needle ? )

Well I have a shoot on the 25th and 26th where we're filming in a bar, so I know I'm going to smoke, plus I need 2 weeks for that magic pill the doctor prescribed to build, so that's the 22nd, and I can't quit during the week (because I'll be a miserable bastard) so the 4th is the first Saturday that works for me. So... I will just sleep all day on the 4th and 5th, and then by the time I come into work on Monday I'll be at Day 3...

Agreed! Those breaks are tought to give up. It's like a little reward system you set up for yourself. I still go out and get some fresh air occasionally (i work in an office - sucks), but only a few times a week rather than the 5-6 times a day when I smoked. The plus side is that you're more productive. If your job has any personal value - that's great. If you're just puncing a time card at a dead-end job (that's my situation), being more productive isn't much of a motivating factor. Regardless, it's worth it.

Another good motivating factor is to tally up the cash you're spending on smokes. The first month or two, just let yourself blow that cash on some new equipment guilt-free. Get a new shockmount, or those overpriced cables you might not normally buy.

I appreciate it Hudson.. I've already quit all the other chemicals (completely different story), but this is the big next step.

In this package of Zyban it has all this quitting stuff: Step one: tell yourself you are going to quit. Step two: pick a quit date...

You don't even quit smoking with this program until step 10... It's only a twelve step program. I don't know who writes this crap.

Either way, I am on my way to being able to walk into restaurants that do not have a smoking section (I boycott them right now).

EDIT:
The money issue is a hard sell to me. I live in NC, and only in the last year has a carton gone from $20 to $25. It sucks paying $25 a carton, but I did the math... I am going through 6 cartons a month, so that's an extra $150 for me to most likely eat during the first month I quit.

Hmmm. Something about that sounds familiar.... Quitting all your severe addictions without the aid of 12-step... just pure mental strength... hmm.... was it Oprah... Oh, yeah!!??

Hudson??!! Is it true?! Are you really the alter ego of James Frey hiding out on dvxuser? Man, I loved your book, A Million Little Pieces! Wow, Oprah really put it to you!

All kidding aside, I admire your strength in quitting cold turkey, Hudson. But use whatever it takes, Yankee. This poo poo ain't easy and there's no shame in using nicotine gum, patches, or those stupid "yes, I'm smoking a tampon applicator" devices that some use.

I used nicotine gum for the first week or so just a few times a day. Helped keep me from having that weird, hollowed out pressure-headache-without-the-pain-but-want-to-kill-someone-anyway feeling you get when your body REALLY wants its fix. I definitely slept my ass off the first one or two weeks, though. It seemed like every spare second I had, I just slept while my body adjusted.

I'm a hardcore nicotine addict... I think its going to be really really hard to quit.

How long does it take until the cravings stop?

i quit about 8 months ago and i snuck a cigarette about two months ago. MAN was it a bad idea. i got the biggest headrush ever, felt woozy, couldnt walk, wanted to puke. i felt SICK. it was right outside Borders and i went in to go find a book afterwards and ZAM im hit with this sour stomach and distorated vision/inabilty to perform basic motor functions. i had to sit down for nearly 8 minutes. Tobacco can be really powerful if you have been addicted to it once, and then tried it again. i've done some hardcore stuff, and that cigarette was a 5 on a scale of 1-10 for intensity. (pretty high for me... don't ask what else i would rate.)

if youve quit for a long time, dont try going back, was a bad idea for me. will be smoke free forever, the rest of my life (tobacco that is :) )

Yankee,

I wish you the best on your quest. Once you start, don't give yourself an out with an excuse. Put the same energy into is as your passion for baseball and it will breeze. We'll be following your progress and use us a support group.

Oh, lord, this thread makes me anxious. I toy with the idea of quitting, but I've given up all of my other vices. I tell myself, I gotta keep just this one. And caffeine -- can't give that up either... Good luck!

What would it take to get EVERYONE on DVXuser to quit?

What would it take to get EVERYONE on DVXuser to quit?

Ambitios and crazy? sure. But I'll bet if we pick a date and all (or as many as possible ) quit on that day, we can all support each other and kick ass dooing something else instead.

How about March 4th? no excuses...

Just an idea...

That beeing said, no I don't smoke, never had, and never will. Sorry if I come across as an ass here, I don't mean to.
Kudos to those who have managed to quit, best of luck to all those who are in the process, "what are you thinking?" to all those who continue to smoke, and "DON'T DO IT!" to all those thinking of starting.

- Mikko ... will only ever smoke if he's on fire.

What originally put the idea in my head was reading this thread this past summer when I was lurking here a lot. Lately it's everything from my girlfriend complaining that she doesn't want to stay over because the house smells like an ashtray (she quit a month ago) to a revelation I had on the couch a week ago. I was laying with my dog (I have this tiny 5lb poodle, fine, let the bashing begin) and I was thinking that I'm killing him by smoking in the house. It didn't have much to do with me but more to do with him, so I'm going to do this.

I have made public announcements to my friends and family, plus everyone here, so I am going to be a quitter... It's good to be a quitter, right?
