Hypothetically speaking... I have a 100B

Yes, hypothetically... tomorrow I'll wake up & have my brand new 100B. My first real semi-pro camcorder ever.

Once I've regained my composure and changed my pants, I get down to the nitty gritty details. I plan on shooting a drama - in and outdoors. At this point, I'm sure I'll need:
  • a tripod
  • the DVX Book & DVD
  • a case
  • panasonic DV tapes
  • the correct software (I own Vegas 6) and a lot of hard drive space (currently have 300 free GB)
  • misc boards, pulleys, and wheeled stuff, etc. :D
  • yeah, some lighting equipment
I think I'll need:
  • a wide angle lens (?)
  • UV filters
  • an external mic
  • possibly more HD space?
Yeah, it is my first project, but I want it to rule (repeat: want not expect it to rule). If it costs an extra couple of hundred to help it rule, I'll shell it out. My question to you is this: am I on the right track? I hear the natural Leica shoots pretty wide as it is... so what's your opinion regarding the wide angle lens? I will be doing a few indoor, crappy apartment/small room shots. Any other beginner lens types am I missing?

How much hard drive space does about an hour of 24p video take up?

I'm most worried about good sound on my projects (to help make up for my lack of video experience). So an external mic is a must, right?

I'm not asking for full documentation on any of this stuff, just a few brief opinions. Any advice you're willing to give. Bottom line - to get a somewhat respectable product, can the camera on it's own suffice - and if not, what would you use?

Thanks for reading.

First off, you are on the right track, if you have a budget the size of Mel Gibson's mouth.

Second, use the search feature before asking too many questions. Santa dont take too lightly to that. (Youll know what I mean if you dont take my advice)

And, if you only hypothetically have a DVX, will you buy one?

And lastly, read lots of threads. To answer most of your questions, read this sucker if your on a tight budget:

And, read these for everything about sound before EVER asking a question, especially about sound:

For stuff about dollies (track systems to move camera smoothly), looks in the DIY section, but look at my thread- which lets you make a dolly for about 60$.

Use the lighting section well. Everyone will tell you that you need good lighting, no matter what camera.

And, before buying all that, make a movie with something less. For a first timer like me, youll learn that for a first, all you need is good sound, a camera, and lighting. Dont buy all that for your first movie, especially if...

Make sure you have a script. Dont buy a bunch of stuff, then not have a script to work with. "Dont buy the cart before you buy the horse."

And, by the way,
  • a tripod
  • the DVX Book & DVD
  • a case
  • panasonic DV tapes
  • the correct software (I own Vegas 6) and a lot of hard drive space (currently have 300 free GB)
  • misc boards, pulleys, and wheeled stuff, etc. :D
  • yeah, some lighting equipment
  • a wide angle lens (?)
  • UV filters
  • an external mic
  • possibly more HD space?
Wont cost an extra hundred or so, it will cost an extra $5000-$10000 or so.

Awesome, thank you. Like that thread says, I thought my situation was a bit unique, but this will answer everything.
