F3: Hyperdeck Shuttle - best practice

So, my Shuttle failed to perform on my last job - no worries XDcam was fine.

Previously I have inserted my (Sandisk) SSD(s) into my Imac and downloaded the footy and then deleted the shots (apple A delete)

Anyway I guess they are 2 months old now and the 'delete' was not actually deleting the files - I guess the discs filled up.

Anyway Ive now formatted both my SSDs (EXFAT?? - will that work for long clip?s) and the things are/appear to be working again.

So that is all a bit random

What is your best practice for prepping disc for shooting?

When I still had the Shuttle I formatted my Sandisk Extreme SSD 480GB to Exfat before each job. The recorder worked flawless except once when I had a battery running low. Then it couldn't write fast enough and I ended up with dropped frames. But I already knew that due to the flashing LED on the shuttle so I quickly swapped out the battery.

Yep I think formatting not deleting is the thing..

Any other observations like how to work out how much time you have left, can you play back etc - really Ive just plugged it in and shot!

You have to empty the trash. On Mac OS, the files aren't removed from the drive until the trash is emptied, so you won't recover the space of those files until then.

Hi Sam,

I just format them before use at the start of every job. If I'm sharing the files with guys on PC I format EXFAT if I'm using the files myself I just format Mac OS Extended.

Surinder.

I've noticed more errors mounting drives using HFS+ (Mac OS Extended) over EXFAT. Some of my HFS+ drives occasionally won't mount on OSX, although a Windows PC with MacDrive can read them.
Now, I just format EXFAT the night before. Any computer that can read SDXC cards can read it, and it's a much more open standard.
