Hyperdeck Shuttle 2 now does ProRes.

That will literally pay for itself in two jobs with one of my clients. I couldn't quite absorb the cost of the NanoFlash, and couldn't stomach the post-compression to ultimately deliver PR422-HQ from the earlier Hyperdeck Shuttle, but this will do nicely.

I keep thinking about this 10bit out thing and wish we had more specs on the AF-100a. What we saw with 8bit vs. the internal codec wasn't worth the hassle of using an external recorder on the AF-100.

I agree. We tested the AF100 internal codec against SDI 8bit uncompressed out when we first got it and decided it really didn't make that big a difference.

Question about the Shuttle - I use an EVF exclusively, which means that I depend on the on-screen info, but I can get over that (I'll miss VU meters though)..

What I can't get over is assurance that the camera is actually running.

Does the Shuttle have an indicator like a tally light that shows via HDMI out?

I recorded externally exclusively with my AF100 from late January until I sold it. The place it makes a big difference is noise. You actually get a little more noise when recording externally. This is because the AVCHD codec normally hides it. When recording externally you get real noise tho, not the blocky artifacts you get with AVCHD. This means noise reduction programs like Neat Video work 10 fold better. Which means cleaner darks. I've experienced 1/2 to one stop more latitude once cleaned up.

You can make it detect either record flags embedded in the SDI stream or timecode change via SDI stream. So plug into the camera via SDI, and then plug the HDMI EVF into the shuttle. It'll do the SDI to HDMI conversion for you. Simple as that. This is how I did it. And there is a red light on the record button on the Shuttle that lights up to verify it's recording.

Right, that's what everyone says. No big diff. But I also remember everyone saying that "oh yeah, you're recording 4:2:2 10 bit but still only getting 8 bit depth because it's an 8 bit camera and is replicating something...or other." or something like that. So is there something "real 4:2:2 10 bit" about the upgrade? That's what I would think/hope.

Here was my set up:
AF100 24psf via SDI (recorded internally for backup) --> Hyperdeck Shuttle 2 --> HDMI EVF loop-thru --> HDMI client monitor. I also came out the Hyperdeck Shuttle 2 SDI simultaneously --> SDI onboard monitor loop thru --> SDI directors monitor.

I did this all the time and I can say it works flawlessly. You can go into the Hyperdeck Shuttle 2 via SDI or HDMI and come out both SDI and HDMI simultaneously if you want.

Read my post earlier, there is definitely a difference.

Difference on real 10 bit would be banding and better gradability. How much different is the real question.

Yeah, I read it. It's interesting about the noise and how you see that instead of blocking, which is a huge thing for this camera. What I was referring to were statements like this from Barry.. sorry about just cutting and pasting this. It's from this thread http://www.dvxuser.com/V6/showthrea...a-2-or-Samurai&highlight=8+bit+AF100+recorder

" Problem is, just about all the cameras you'd want to use with these recorders, are 8-bit output only. As Anatusa said, the AF100, FS100, FS700, and C300 are all 8-bit output only. They all output 4:2:2 8-bit on their SDI and HDMI ports."

so if with the upgrade, we get "real 4:2:2 10 bit" out of the SDI port then we can expect even better performance from the recorder, but what? I would guess more ability to push it around in post, improvement in banding and posterization, better keys on green screen, ... what else? Like Erik, I'm wondering will it be worth it. I was thinking f3 next for 4:2:2 but if the AF100A can get us that with the next version and the hyperdeck shuttle, it might be a better value.
