hyperdeck shuttle 2: DNxHD VS Uncompressed

Well- if you want to keep 10bit than you can't use ANY of the effects/filters which have no 32bit logo- this is for sure. Even if your source is 8bit, but has many gradients higher than 8bit processing precision helps to avoid additional banding and if possible should be used.
Another thing for sure- DNxHD source can't show more banding than XDCAM HD or AVCHD- in worse case it should be about the same.

Thanks Richard and kolak for the updates. Does this mean that Colorista II isn't going to be useful for 10-bit files?

Both Colorista II and Looks II work great for 10bit but you just cant preview the 10bit grade (looks all banded and 8bit-like) until you deselect the effect in the effects panel.

Thanks. So, when I export the sequence, banding will not be a problem? (Still, kind of makes it hard to know how hard to grade stuff.)

No it won't be a problem, but I'm also saying that you can preview the 10bit grade if you unselect the effect in the effect panel. You don't have to wait until you export to see the 10bit preview. That is assuming your sequence settings are setup for 10bit preview.

Thanks. Not sure I'm following -- when you say "unselect the effect" do you mean turn off the effect?

No. I mean make sure it isn't hi lighted. If you hi light (showing that it is selected) the effect by clicking it once, it seems to enact 8bit preview mode. click it again (or click elsewhere in the panel's empty space) and unhilight it, whammo you are previewing in 10bit.

I did a quick check on how a frame grab from DNxHD vs uncompressed would look when imported into PP CS5 and PP CS6. These images are at 400%.
The first one is DNxHD in CS5 and after that uncompressed in CS5. Next one is DNxHD in CS6 and last uncompressed in CS6. Notice that they all look about the same except the last one with uncompressed in CS6. It's much smoother and shows more detail. If I apply any effect to the uncompressed clip in CS6 it looks the same as the rest of the samples. Why?

Okay, just did some more testing and it's just something that happens in PP. I took the DNxHD file and rendered it to uncompressed YUV 10-bit 4:2:2 and when imported into PP it looks as good as the uncompressed clip. It's all there but PP displays it wrong.
