Hydra and dynamic range

Apologies if this has been answered before in the gigantous Hydra thread (http://www.dvxuser.com/V6/showthread.php?t=92075)... when Reel Stream states that the mod increases the HVX-200 dynamic range to 86db, what does this mean exactly? Am I correct in assuming that this brings us closer to the range of film - in other words, more colors between almost-white and white (and almost black and black)? Will this get rid of the clipped-look the HVX gives us, or can this be attributed to another matter entirely?

Many thanks,

There's theoretical, and then there's observed. Each 6dB represents an additional stop, so 86dB = a potential of about 14 stops, which would yes indeed match the dynamic range of 35mm film. However, how much of that potential range is actually usable remains to be seen; it'll be limited by the noise floor at least. Whatever the actual usable amount is, it'll be more than the stock HVX. Juan got about 2.5 stops more dynamic range from the DVX. The HVX is already a stop better than the DVX, so maybe the potential exists to get another 1.5 stops. Maybe more, maybe less, remains to be seen.

Thanks for that Barry. Wow. So... theoretically speaking, more stops than the HVX-500! I can't wait to see real-world Hydra numbers.
