Hybrid camera - stills & video at the same time

Hi guys!

If you had to grab stills photos from video...
- what kind of video camera spec would you ask for?
- which camera would you choose?

I'm asking because I'm often sent out with both a video camera and stills camera covering news.

The problem is that I can't operate them both at once. Usually the stills pictures suffers, and SD videograbs is not good enough for newspaper print.

How can I grab decent stills from video? :embarasse

Shooting video and stills is becoming more common in journalism and corporate work. I often take my Nikon D70 along with my DVX or HVX. When I covered some political stuff recently I noticed that many of the national photographers were shooting video as well. They don't care for it but it's where things are heading. You can shoot both you just have adjust your mindset.

Many years ago you didn't want to be known as a jack-of-all and master of none. Then a few years ago you were expected to be a jack-of-all in the digital video world. Now you're expected to be a master-of-all. The more you do it the more natural it will feel.

This is not only happening at the small town TV level, but on the feature level with guys like Robert Rodriguez setting the bar.

As far as I know there are several newspapers out there who take frame grabs from the Canon A1 and/or the Sony V1U for their print edition. The "Dallas Morning News" being one of them. David Leeson is one of the pioneers in that field, you might want to check out his story on Sportsshooter and shoot him an email: http://www.sportsshooter.com/news/1774
Best,
Matthias
