HVXitis-Deadly or just contagious?

When I had my Sony FX1 (2 years ago... sold it) I spent a lot of time fondling it and marvelling at the futuristic design... the way a person admires a beautifully crafted hammer.

I acutally limited my shooting time so I can keep my video heads pristine as possible... perhaps to delay the day I see the dreaded drop-out.

I still don't get what people saw in that camera. I was asked to use one on a documentary I was a shooter for and was amazed by certain gaping frustrations. No image controls. Images that just looked like sharp video. No 24p. The one I got didn't even have a freaking XLR input on it (we had to wait for an adapter to be sent)!!!

I don't get it. The Cinealtas are fantastic. Why to the lower end Sony's frustrate so?

PS: I think I'm developing an "HVX eye". I beginning to see zebra stripes on highlights even when I'm not using the camera.

Boy, I know what you mean. I'm starting to focus assist too. (I should be able to throw away my glasses by next month.)

Call on the addiction - its not fatal but annoying to say the least. I have to sort through 20 hours of DV footage in the next week, and after editing 3 projects from the HVX I wonder how I ever believed that DV looked good. Then again, I was using a lower end cam, but still my eyes almost hurt to look at it after seeing the amazing clarity and colors of the HVX - I feel like I'm watching monochromed footage, even to a visible degree from the HVX's DV tapes. After I finish these projects I never intend to touch tape again (unless it's from a CineAlta - that cam makes a clean-shaved guy look like he hasn't shaved for days!)

Having compared the HD footage versus the SD footage from my HVX, I can say there's no going back to SD for me.

I almost want to run through the DVX forum and scream at those who're considering the DVX: "You foo--- "

But this is a DVXuser forum... and I'd be better off being silent.

Well David:

At the time it came out, it had the best pic of any consumer cam (my opinion, ofcourse), and the price was reasonable.

Nowadays, stacked against the HVX, it is less desirable in comparison. I wouldn't choose the FX1 now, even if it was a bargain. The HVX is defintely worth the 2 G's extra.

For those who want to do weddings and event coverage and don't have a lot of money, the FX1 is good enough.

Ditto...to everyone. I shot part of a promo for a local school outside yesterday they had an olympic day. I was amazed at the ability to get a full range of exposure maintaining most of the sky detail and the detail in the rest of the shot as well. I'll eventually post some clips. But it was a blast to shoot. My only complaint is logging footage on a MAC and renaming clips something meaningful is a total pain in the butt.

Yes.. the renaming and numbering is a bit wonky, but everything else is glorious. I have shot a couple hundred cards worth of crap already... and I'm always interested in shooting. Sometimes I just shoot for FREE.. or some beers, if it's a band... because it's so damn pleasing and so gratifying..

Yes it's a hammer and it's pounding out some badass stuff. Tape also gives ya cooties!

Yes affter shooting with the HVX for almost 2 months Staight ...Indusrial Green screen, a comercail, then a feature...going to a Comercail shooting Beta (D35) sucked....Shooting in 16x9 I wondered why they didn't put the time code out side of the Video... and Play back on the HVX is a dream almost instant play back of anything as long as it's still on the card...and on Beta we had to Wait on camera For bars and Tone and Tape change...I've never relly had to wait on P2 card...my AC's did have to run a couple times during 12min takes....its funny that we shot on beta because the Producer just got his own HVX...
