HVX200AP & FCP-7 Variable Frame Rate

Good morning to all,

Does anybody out there have a good work flow for log & Transfer 720p24 VFR P2 media into FCP7.

Issue: I record 720p24 or 720pn24 undercrank and overcrank by using the variable frame rate menu in the scene file of camera. Then I capture via firewire to Log & Transfer window into mew FCP Studio 2009 upgrade from Studio (FCP5).

FCP adjusts out the over/under cranking automatically and I can't figure a way to stop it.

I have tried all kinds of capture formats with no luck. I read the book and did all of the stuff it talks about including putting the clip into the viewer, selecting tools and removing the pull down.

It use to work in FCP 5 without any monkey motions. I'm sure it is something simple I'm missing.

Thanks for any help.

I am already suspicious, there is no such thing as under crank or over crank in 720 24p, only in 720 24pN. As you know, 720 24p is recorded in a 720 60p stream, it just has the 24 frames flagged.

If you put an overcranked or undercraked clip recorded in 720 24pN into an FCP sequence, of course it will display the overcranking or undercranking. Why would it not? Not understanding what you were expecting VFR footage to display as?

The entire removing pull down thing is used to extract 24 frames from 720 24p 60 frame stream. But i not needed or used with 720 24pN footage as the camera has already done this.

What is your sequence setting?
Are you using an output card solution like an Aja Kona or Blackmagic card?
Did you use easy setup?
Did you import tha footage straight into FCP via log and transfer?
Need your computer type, RAM, OS, QT version, FCS version

Make sure you are watching the clips in a 24 fps timeline. If you film at 60fps, slow mo, and put it in a 60 fps timeline, it will be normal speed.

In FCP set an easy setup for HD 720p24. This will set your timebase for 23.98. Shoot in 720/24pN as Puredrifting said. Select any VFR available as you're doing. After log and transfer, drop the clips onto the timeline. Any overcranked shots will play back slower. Likewise, undercrancked shots will be sped up (as compared to 24fps). Shouldn't need to do anything else.

Under Crank blunder

Under Crank blunder

Here is a self caused problem. Shot some footage on an HPX300 P2 DVCproHD 720/30PN with the VFR set at 24frames unintentionally (was a 3rd cam and the VFR frame setting was overlooked accidentally). Any thoughts on how to play it out and possible get it as close to normal 720/30p in FCP?

Playing it out in a 24/30/or60 timeline all seem to come to the same result, footage displayed under cranked and 20% faster then normal.

Is there a way to play it out as 24p (24 frames a second) then export it as a 720/30 .mov?

Any ideas much appreciated.

Thanks

I am dealing with the same problem, Digimark. 720p30N setting shot at 24fps. The best success I have had is taking the files into Cinema Tools and conforming to 24fps. This added, almost precisely, 20% to the length of the clip. Good luck.

Anyone else have suggestions.

Thanks
