HVX200A with 1080p on tape

Today I got my HVX200A and after I tried the Record options I could see that 1080 on tape is missing. Why is that?

What is the best option now to record 1080, Notebook with OnLocation, P2 or FireStore? What are pros and cons for each?

(Budged is very limited)

The HVX does not record HD to tape, only DV.

The recording formats for the HVX200 have been discussed here for years, along with the pros and cons of each.

P2 is expensive, Firestore can be a bit fragile, OnLocation isn't very portable. Depends on your needs.

like said above. 200a does NOT shoot any form of HD to tape.

as far as pros and cons of other methods go. the best choice of recording method has a LOT to do with what you shoot and the environment that you shoot in...

If you need to go on a crane, shoot P2. Expensive, but your best option.

I'm not sure that flatly characterizing P2 as "expensive" is all that fair considering what the format is - a very compact, very high-speed solid state memory card that is reusable thousands of times over. And it has been declining in cost rapidly, particularly most recently. I know you know all of this as well as anyone Perrone, but perhaps slightly moderated language would do it more justice.

My $.02

Because no one needs DVCPRO HD on small DV tape. Not my words.

On the other hands, if Panasonic allowed recording DVCPRO HD on MiniDV cassette, one standard 70m tape would run for less than 9 minutes. Not very practical.

Why should I buy a P2 card instead of FireStore? FS has more than 100GB and P2 16 or 32. Is it impossible to use FS with crane?

Sorry, however, when a format costs $1000 per hour for recording, I consider that "expensive". Especially considering that is the NEW, more inexpensive variant. The traditional, reusable thousands of times variant costs $1350 per hour. Considering the Firestore option would allow more than double that recording time, for less cost, it seems prudent for those who can use it.

Hopefully, that moderated language makes my position more clear.

The firestore is hard drive. At least the one compatible with Panasonic's format. Not the best idea to try recording onto a hard drive while you swing it around in the air on the end of a crane.

that is typical, new-user, short-sighted logic. focusing only on your wallet and NOT long term value/usability. there are situations where firestores arent well suited. and situations where a pair of P2 cards wont be sufficient. BUT no. i cant see ANY reason why crane use would pose a problem for a firestore - unless you were doing some insanely fast crane whips. which would be unwatchable anyway...

id aggressively argue that logic. typical crane moves arent going to subject a drive mechanism to undue stress. and you can always run a long enough firewire cable to circumvent such issues IF they did exist...

here is some logic to recording format choice:

1. if you buy a P2 camera and cant afford about another $2000 for P2 cards you probably dont NEED to be shooting HD in the first place.

2. firestores are great. but they are hard drives, and hard drives DO fail. hard drives also suffer from temperature and vibration problems. so if you shoot very loud, cold, hot or shaky situations - that could be a problem. a second concern is that they connect to the camera via firewire cable so if you shoot in busy or confined environments, there IS a very real chance they could be unplugged from the camera...

P2. firestore. direct to laptop. ALL have their uses and any ONE of them is NOT suited for ALL needs.

I fI decide to use P2 cards, do I need an extra Card reader too for Laptop (Not apple) or can I use it without buying anything extra?

Depends on the slots in the laptop.

Search around the forum some; the answers to all of this will be here. :)

But you are talking about something, though it costs less per gig, which defeats a number of the purposes of the P2/solid state workflow. Over time, the advantage of P2 over Firestore or anything else would be manifest. What's time, labor, and ease of workflow worth (including, of course, not needing to deal with a battery-powered brick tethered to the camera)?

In any case, if you're going to use a camera so infrequently that the cost per hour would be close to $1000, then you'd be better off renting anyway.

I really try to search forum before I make any question but I can't find 100% right answer that I look for.

What kind of slot need a laptop to use P2 cards? I can buy a laptop that has this, but I need to know exactly what kind of slot I need?

Thanx
