HVX200a vs HVX200p

Hi, can someone please explain the difference between the 200a and the 200p? I own the 200p, and it is not a PAL camera. (you do have that option however). On cnet, they have a video review of the 200p, but no written review.

The 200p is the original HVX200, and the 200a is the second-generation HVX. Any review of the original HVX200 that you find would be a review of the 200p--they are the same camera (the p stood for P2, I believe).

The 200A is identical in all ways except the chip block. The new chips make it 1/2 stop more sensitive, with much lower noise, less smear, and better color reproduction.

Hello,

"P" stands for Pacific, in reference to the distribution channel. So any time you see a camera model that ends in P (ie: AG-HVX200P, AG-HMC40P, etc) that means it's a US camera.

"E" is for Europe and is PAL.

panasonic has a pretty confusing way of labeling their cameras.

the P and E at the END of the model number (and isnt there also an N or U or something) refer to distribution channels.

where the A right after the HVX200. designates the newer updated HVX200

Sir Barry,

is it possible to replace the chip block in my original 200p with the newer one? it'd be nice to have those benefits you listed. thank you.

The only way to execute that upgrade is to sell your old camera, buy a new one, and figure that the cost differential is the "upgrade fee".

that upgrade strategy has been on my mind for some time. may have to execute it soon while i can still get a decent return on the 200p. thanks.
