What is the crop factor for this camera?

Also how could the focal length possibly be 4.2mm - 55mm, it would be exteremly fish eye on the low end and its not...some one please help explain.

Also what is the proper shutter speed to use this camera

Killer, welcome to DVXuser.

16:9 = aspect ratio

The focal length in mm for a video cam is not the same as it is on a slr type cam due to different sensor size. As mentioned above, there are conversion tables or formulas, since the 35mm equivalent is more common.

There is no "proper shutter speed". A common shutter speed is 2x the frame rate. So shooting 24p frame rate, you might select 1/48sec for the shutter. There are many times you might deviate from this, for example fast action or if you need more light.

If you don't have it, the Barry Green book about the HPX170 will answer every basic question about this and the cam. He is a site founder and participates here all the time.
