Hey Guys,

Just curious why everything I've shot with the HVX200a doesn't fill the entire frame in FCP6, There's a small line of black at the top of the frame that I never got shooting with my DVX100a. Am I doing something wrong? or is that just how it is?

Thanks
Simon

You are shooting with the cam set to letterbox. What you are looking for is 'squeeze'. Find it in the HVX menu under camera setup, i believe.

Letterbox imbeds the 16:9 image in a 4:3 stream by placing black lines on the top and bottom.

Squeeze records the 16:9 as anamorphic and must be unstretched by the NLE or TV.

If you want to make the footage you have 16:9, make a new sequence that is 16:9. Edit your footage to that sequence. Double click a clip and in the motion tab increase the size to 133.3%. Click the clip in the sequence and press command + C. Then highlight all other clips in the sequence, command + click and in the menu select paste attributes. In the dialog click the motion tab.

All of your edits should now fit in your 16:9 "anamorphic" timeline just like animorphic clips would.

I'm not sure if that's what Simon is referring to. I've noticed the same thing when shooting to miniDV casettes. I get about 1 or 2 lines of black across the top. If I shoot interlaced (which I rarely do) it flickers. I solved it by just expanding the footage to 101% in FCP, but that was just a quick fix because it was for a small non-profit project for local fire departments on DVD. I haven't really looked into it more since then.

It's probably to do with your aspect ratio. Check on that. I have to do the conversion all the time to the -50 percent and all of that.
