hvx200a: mini-dv date-time stamp?

I have seen some other threads here. Maybe i'm stuck on a semantic thing: my new job requires that I use the hvx200a as a mini-dv recorder. And that mini-dv tape needs to have date-time "burned" into it. Now, am I unable to record onto mini-dv, recall that info later and dupe out that info burned onto the copy? If so, then i'm selling my 200a and going with my dvx100b. If it will, i gotta get a handle on the term "burning." And feedback appreciado

Can't be done on a 200A in-camera. Or a 100B. I think the DVC30 could do it.

The only way to do it witha 200A or 100B would be to use two cameras, and output the s-video signal from one camera to the s-video input of the other. The camera can put the time/date stamp on the live analog outputs, but cannot burn it into the video.

This was something that was added to the HPX170 and HMC150, but neither of those shoot to DV tape.

just spoke with a panasonic tech support for broadcast cameras. Currently Panasonic does not sell a camera that burns time / date stamp to mini dv. The two DVC cameras that used to do it have been discontinued.

What about this http://www.gonzomodz.com/catalog/time-date-generator-video-date-stamp-p-45.html ?

I NEED to not only have my HVX signal add a time stamp, but I need it output live and redundant. I was thinking one output to a DVD recorder as I write to my p2 cards. (Need the redundancy... I will be shooting legal depositions.) Looks like that won't work? Any way to pass the signal through this gadget, then split the signal to two DVD burners?

There has to be a way to make this work (aside from the second camera method??)

That item may work, but only if you use the HVX as a camera feeding some external recorder(s).
(For some reason, Panasonic seems to disregard the Date/Time-stamp needs of legal video entirely, pushing most of that business to competitors).

It seems it's too late now, but the HVX is NOT the camera for legal videography.
AFAIK, Date/Time stamp is never written to tape by the HVX, though it is sent out through the composite ports (i.e. RCA composite and S-video), and may even be output from the component port, but I'm pretty sure it is NEVER sent out over the Firewire port. (At least according to Barry's HVX Book it isn't; I've tried and it doesn't work on my cam, but mine is an early model).

You can't even use something like a Firestor, an nNovia, or Datavideo recorder, because of the firewire limitation. (It would be nice if those units included a feature to write Date/Time over the incoming signal, but I don't know if that's possible).

For legal work I first bought a DVC20, but that, too, has limitations, i.e. the Date/Time stamp could not be read from the tape by an external JVC VTR. I know it doesn't help you, but I ended up getting an HMC-150 for the legal video work I do (which, admittedly, isn't much). With recent Federal decisions about what constitutes an "original" recording, it's my understanding that the HMC-150 (and, I believe, the HMC-40) satisfies legal or evidentiary needs at the Federal level.
I know other legal vid's use a similar generator for Date/Time.
Good luck finding a suitable a workaround.

Date/Time stamp was added to the HPX170, HMC150, HMC40. It's not present on the HVX200.

You cannot get the date/time stamp recorded directly on the HVX's tape. You could send its firewire signal out to another camera or deck and record there; IINM the video out OSD will overlay the firewire output, at least when the camera is in "pause" mode, so you should be able to display the date/time and then firewire it to another camera and use that as the recorder.

Other than that, yeah, the HVX isn't really designed for legal videography. The other/newer cameras would be a better choice.
